Complete deal breaker then. I'm not adding the expense of self driving to the car if it doesn't actually allow me to surf porn while the car drives.

Camera watching me and complaining is completely out of the question.
The camera operator will let you watch porn as long as you let the camera watch too.

What's funny about this is that until there is widely accepted V2V communication, the opposite will be true. You know how you drive on the freeway during rush hour and most people are driving 70mph+ like 2 car lengths away from the car in front them? An autonomous system will say fucking nope to that and drive much more cautiously. That's a good thing, but the space required for an autonomous car will be larger than a meatbag car for a long time because they are going to be cautious.

When you have a large adoption of autonomous vehicles, you'll see an increase in traffic because they're all going to be spaced out a bunch, accelerate slowly etc. These are just growing pains, but we're not going to see this majestic chorus of vehicles for a very long time, if ever.

You have the automated cars react differently to other automated cars. So while they're giving non automated cars more room they form tight convoys with other automated cars. You will need to give your car directions on where to go and it will share that information with other automated cars to formulate shared plans of action.

Vehicles will have to get a new light that indicates if they are in automated mode are not.

Aye, that's the basis of it and one of the big upsides of V2V comms. But it's going to be a long road to get there. And even when you're there, it's going to be a shitshow getting all the vehicles to abide by the same standard.

And what happens when a wild hacker appears and jams the V2V or spoofs them into crashing into each other?

I think the legal liability on not cooperating will force all the parties to work together.

I expect the largest source of disagreement will be when government makes all cars carry a cooperative vehicle identification device regardless of being automated are not.

Oh yes the standardization wars are going to get pretty ugly as you get a bunch of big companies trying to jocky to try to get their flavor of how their cars work the "standard" I imagine this shakes itself out somewhat quickly but it likely is going to be some serious losers out of the deal.

I'm not big into v2v stuff, but I went to a autonomous vehicles (AUVSI) conference recently and asked all the v2v guys what their security systems were. There's really no good answers yet. In the end I think the difficulty in doing so combined with the ease of creating havok with much simpler means will make it not as big of an issue as people think.

I dunno who you work for, but you haven't commented on Uber/Volvo's rollout of 100 autonomous cars this month. It's on level 3 of the NTSB's chart thingie so it still requires a driver, but Uber hired the lead scientists from CMU and Stanford's Autonomous car team---basically three of the winning teams from DARPA's Grand Challenge a few years ago.

Are you suggesting it's bullshit? They've apparently been piloting it with a couple cars throughout the summer and this month's rollout is the first phase of a commercial test.

What does the driver have to do if it's an autonomous vehicle with a driver?

Reads the newspaper or something. Prolly there to intervene on certain events. Sounds like something the gov just threw in there:

You need to use standard units. How is a fleet of autonomous vehicles compare to a fleet of A) Grandmas B) Rubberneckers trying to check if anyone was decapitate in the crash on other side of highway divider and C) Fleet of Asian (non-Tokyo drift) drivers.

Imagine how our society will change with this being fully implemented. Like say your 15 yr old wants to go to the mall or soccer practice, no problem, have the car take him/her there. Or a disabled person, or a grandma, etc.

Suggesting what is bullshit? The work the automotive industry is doing, including uber/google/tesla, volvo/bosch/ford/freightliner/gm/honda/fuckingeveryone, cmu/standford/mit is not bullshit at all.

What is bullshit, or rather is too optimistic, is the idea that we're going to all be driven around by JohnnyCabs in a few short years.

I've often thought how the most dangerous activity I've ever done in my life has been (and continues to be) travelling in an auto. I wonder if it will change in my life and what the next most dangerous thing will be...

I agree, but standard units change. When driving outside of normal hours I have to realize I'm not driving with the regular pros of my commute but the shitter-class.

People in their regular commute are actually very good drivers when it comes to normal speed.

Just driving the kids to and from school without a driver will have a huge impact on peoples daily routine.

Shcools will have to come up with policies on kids being picked up by unmanned vehicles.

Just imagine all the windowless panel vans filled to the brim with candy picking up your kids from school.
