Agree with the sentiments that this movie easily could have cut down 30-40 mins of long scenery and atmosphere set-up. Overall a 6/10.

Harrison's character felt like such a cop-out, as well as the whole girl/boy switcheroo thing. Why would they have kept his daughter in an isolation thing and working as a memory maker? The whole casino fight felt forced, as well as what happened afterwards. How could they screw up not getting the green eyes right, if they were such masters of replication, and talking about how all her features were set up to entice Deckard? The evil guy was mostly redundant and just set as overly sinister. Joi/hologram girlfriend thing was also pretty cringey, and ultimately didn't help with anything except continuing to make gosling look miserable.

That was the whole point of that character. To show how lonely and pathetic his world is. Just an AI saying what he wants to hear. I thought her whole situation/character was pretty eerie, and just cool to watch come to life.

The holograms were badass (Sinatra, Presley etc).

Gosling's circular character arc was the real fun. As far as I'm aware, the most emotion he's ever put into a role, once it really started to fuck with him.

I accept that I am a soulless robot -> OH SHIT I'M SPECIAL!!!11 -> nm I'm just another tear in the rain.

The child labor factory was a nice touch, too. About as subtle as the soundtrack.

I've never been the biggest fan of Gosling but I agree this is probably the best role he's done.

That scene where the resistance leader tells him it was a girl and not a boy, telling him that he convinced himself that it was him was strong. You really felt bad for him there.

I hope the bean counters at Alcon and Sony take into account it's a 3 hour movie and cut it a little slack. Obviously it was a conscious decision on their part to not edit it down, but at 3 hours it's gonna lose a showing every day. A $30 million opening would be like a $45 million opening for a 2 hour movie. That $400 million number they threw out there is a little scary though, I wonder in movie history how many 3-hour + movies have hit that mark. I think this movie will eventually make money down the line, but it's doubtful to me they will hit the $400m mark they are needing. Sad, this movie is so much more cerebral than all those super-hero movies that get shat out every year. I applaud them for taking the risk to make this movie, but if this movie doesn't do well it's just going to give studios more reason to do super-hero and transformer sequels instead of new IPs, which is sad to me.

Thats a bummer that Alcon is behind the TV show The Expanse, if Blade Runner hits their books hard it may affect that show :(

Geostorm is imo gonna be a good test, it opens Oct 20th and is another one of those trashy Armageddon style movies (Gerard Butler, satellites control the weather, someone hijaacks it). If it does really well... well, Hollywood will know which kind of movie to make :(

I loved it. Definitely did justice to the first movie.

Would be a 10/10 if Jared Leto wasnt in it.

I didn't. I guessed he hammed it up as the joker and that hate is carrying over tho this? I didn't watch Suicide Squad so I don't know how bad it was.

Great movie.

I'm wondering why they made Leto's character blind. Seems silly.

He is a demiurgic figure, a god of sorts, so
having him omniscient (through his flying cameras, but also through the holograms and drones) makes iconographic sense.

On a side note, that's one of the things that can be nitpicked about the film: You would think that in the strong tradition of google, facebook or roombas, the Wallace corporation would put some sort of implant in all the replicants it produces.

PS: Obviously, Leto's acting and the way his character is written also work toward this 'bigger than life' effect. I think it's a bit of a mixed bag, more in writting than in acting, but I did very much like the part where he laments having only colonized 9 worlds.

Didn't hate him, although mostly because he wasn't in it as much as I thought he was. Pretty tame overall compared to how far Leto could have gone with it, I believe.

I would even go a step further. It doesn't make any sense why someone would create replicants without following Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics. That's the built-in failsafe we already know about. If Wallace had done that (or even going back to Tyrell in the first movie), then you wouldn't have to worry about replicants harming humans and destroying our civilization. You wouldn't have Luv killing the female police chief. Etc. So it does take a bit of suspension of belief. Still, taken as a whole I loved this movie.

Just saw it this weekend. I watched the final cut of the original jut before we went (whatever was available on syfy). It was a great movie, my only complaints were the wasted time flying around and the volume issues. I had to cover my ears about a half dozen times because the music got turned up to 11. Most of those were during the wasted time flying around. Then there were at least 2 scenes were everyone was mumbling and I wished I could have turned on subtitles. Until I came here, I had no idea why leto killed the fresh replicant girl. I figured it was an excuse for some gratuitous nudity.

I also didn't realize deckhard was supposed to be a replicant and I even watched the version of the original where it was supposed to be more clear.

This movie is probably the ultimate noir experience in science fiction and easily the best thing I watched all year. The level of mind fuckery that went on with K over the course of the movie was just incredible. Also, holy shit can Ford still act and was it awesome to see EJO kill it again on screen. And somewhere along the line Bautista got pretty fucking good at acting, too. People bag on Gosling, but this movie and The Good Guys have been two of my favorites over the past two years and he knocked it out of the park in both. Music was a bit overdone (Zimmer style is unmistakable), but every moment of this movie was perfectly crafted. This movie (along with Fury Road and The Martian) has to be one of the best in the past decade at nailing its genre and not talking down to its audience in the process. I hope this makes bank, because we need more movies like this and less Bay shit or Apatow virtue signal comedies.

That is the central dilemma of both movies (and the book that was the source material). You cannot have that level of control/restraint on a biological construct with all the variables involved. And even if you could, it would not be the seemless human seeming product that they were aiming for. "More Human than Human"

I thought he was good. I mean, rich people are weird now. Imagine in half a century in that fucked up of a world what they are like?
