Booking a honeymoon and have pretty much decided on Cancun. I haven't locked in a place to stay, but am looking strongly at the Marriott CasaMagna as it seems to be pretty good bang for the buck. Any experience on other hotels in this area that provide the best value? Also, things to see/do while there? Neither of us has ever been there. Are the Tulum ruins etc worth the trip?

Wife and I went to Cancun (actually Puerto Morelos which is a bit south, in between Playa Del Carmen and Cancun) for our first anniversary. We stayed at Now Jade which is part of AM Resorts. All-inclusive, great beach, decent hotel restaurants. We took a tour out to the Chichen Itza ruins in the middle of peninsula. Decision was between this and Tulum, and wife had always wanted to see the big one. The actual ruins themselves were awesome, but the bus drive is like 3-4 hours each way, and we went in July so it was like 105 degrees with 70% humidity. Take lots of water and sun screen.

On another visit to Cancun back in 2004-2005 with some college buddies, we stayed in Cancun proper at The Westin resort. It was waaaaaaaaay far south compared to the rest of the hotels on the strip, so bus rides took 20 minutes just to get into the action. Every night we would head up to where the big mall / bars / restaurants were. I can't even really find it on google maps, so fuck if I know where we actually were. The night life was crazy, bars are typically $20-30 cover but all you can drink once inside. Almost every night we ate at the same Mexican restaurant that was kinda on an alley-way that had a ton of foot traffic passing by. Awesome place to people watch.

Cancun was fun, but expect a lot of college age kids. Late summer is considered the "Mexican" travel season where the area is flooded with visitors from other parts of Mexico. As I get older and not into the stay up all night drinking and dancing scene, Cabo San Lucas was a much more enjoyable experience. More low-key, older more mature people, a bit more fun stuff to do (downtown area, seeing the Arch, went para-sailing, snorkeling, etc).

Bit vague, but hope this helps some.

Don't understand Cancun either. If you can rebook, go to Cozumel instead. That's more for couples and there are some real nice black coral jewelry shops there. If you are hell bent on Cancun take a trip to Isla Mujeres. Just don't do the snorkeling there, it's a cluster fuck and dangerous.

Dunno what your budget is but I stayed at the Moon Palace in Cancun and it's a great resort. It's also all inclusive.

El Dorado Royale if it's within your price bracket is hands down the best place in the Cancun region to stay at. If you're big into food it's the best you'll ever eat at an all inclusive resort, hell I'd say it comparable to a lot of high end restaurants. The beach is decent, the staff are amazing and there is tons to do locally. After a week there I considered liquidating everything I own, becoming a member and riding our living there as long as I could. It's really that great of a resort.

We just booked our honeymoon in Playa Del Carmen at one of the Paradisus all inclusive. Never been to Mexico or stayed at a resort of this type so not really sure what to expect. We just want to sit there and drink away from work and the local day to day. It came recommended from two or three coworkers who had been on their honeymoon. Anyone else have experience or general tips?

When I went to Mexico we were staying at a villa in Playa Del Secreto (in between Cancun and Playa Del Carmen iirc, it's on the beach where they film Corona commercials). Here are a couple of the experiences we had:

We had a shuttle service bring us from the airport to the villa. The bill was around $75 for the shuttle for 8 of us, my dad paid them with a $100 bill told them to keep the change as a tip. As we were all funneling into the villa the driver grabbed a younger cousin of mine and told her he couldn't accept $100 bills because they are often counterfeit. She went and told my dad and my dad gave her two $50's to give the driver. The driver exchanged the cash with my cousin then left. When my cousin gave the $100 bill back to my dad he immediately knew it wasn't the one he gave the driver initially. My dad gave him a fresh crisp bill, the one he got back was worn, washed and of course it turned out to be a fake. Numerous phone calls to the car service by both us and the villa manager (who recommended the car service) got no where.

A couple of different times we had issues with change. Once was at a restaurant in Playa Del Carmen where my uncle tried to pay for a $50 meal with a $100 bill and the waiter disappeared without ever bringing any change (with the rest of the staff saying he went home and didn't know what was going on). Another was at a gas station where they took a $50 bill for ~$20 in gas and never returned with change.

There were also some very pushy vendors at Quinta Avenida but they were pretty easy just to ignore and walk away from. Just warn your wife that if she window-shops the vendors will try to goad and guilt her into buying something. Also if you do go shopping there remember every price there is negotiable. I personally hate bartering but you have to if you shop there.

That sucks that people you know have been ripped off. On the other hand, my parents have had a house in Playa Del Carmen for 6 years, as well as a couple of my uncles/aunts, my god parents, and several other family friends. All told there's about 10 families that own a house down there, and while I don't talk to everyone regularly, my parents at least have never had a single issue down there in terms of getting ripped off and the like.

But as with anywhere else touristy, you do need to keep your wits about you because there's always some asshole waiting to prey on the ignorant or innocent.

Neither of us have any plans to leave the grounds of our adults only, hopefully gated, inclusive resort. Hopefully we avoid all those shenanigans. Unless it is to buy some Mexican knock off RHW that will probably kill me. Thank you for the heads up though opiate, we'll keep an eye out.

I'm pretty sure in Mexico you can probably just hit up a pharmacy and get some actual viagra without a script if you are looking for some sexual PED's.

I'll be heading here for a honeymoon in September. We're thinking Secrets the Vine is where we'll probably stay. It's an AMResorts brand like someone up above stayed at. Has anyone else been to this specific one?

I also want to go check out at least one of the pyramids in the area. Chichen Itza seems like a total tourist trap that everyone goes to. Would we be better off trying to get a tour of Ek Balam or Tulum? I don't think Coba is very convenient from Cancun. I can walk to El Rey from our resort to see those ruins.

As a diver, fuck you. Buying coral jewelry is not much different from buying ivory.

Chichen Itza is a beating of a drive. Takes about 3 hours there, 3 hours back. We went in the middle of the summer, so it was about 102 degrees and sun burn city. Still pretty fucking cool though. There is actually a small'ish hotel on site at the ruins that has hosted Presidents and stuff. It's where the buses and vans drop off. Wouldn't be a bad idea to stay there a night just to break up the drive.

Definitely would like to go back and check out Tulum.

That looks nice. Wife and I were looking for an adult only place. Wanted to go for a week in Jan but that fell through. Looks good as an idea for next year.
Yeah I was impressed with both, but the food was better at Secrets. There is a beach Cabana guy there named Oscar (Hope he is still there because we plan on going back). We would slip him a 20 in the morning, and a 20 before we left the beach. The guy can read minds. "I sure could use some.." "HEY! MR UT! I brought you some fish tacos!"... "I am kind of tired of the fruity drinks... I could use a coro..." "HEY MR UT! I bought you a Corona!" The guy was the best.

Cabo was very good too and this was even after the hurricane. (We went in December 2014). The resort itself was fantastic with wait staff, completely adult only, quieter, but still able to drink and mingle with everyone (We met a lot of great people from Canada. In Fact, my wife and I add a few couples to Facebook as friends and we are now planning a Cruise in 2017 with the one of the couples). The food wasn't the best though. All inclusives usually have decent food, and the breakfast and lunches were good, along with the room service and such, but the dinner's were pretty bad. A really plain italian dish one night, and this weird ass roast with gravy for one of the others. The swim up bar is great though. And buckets of beer, etc. The other only downside here is you can't swim the ocean because of the current. You need to go to the Sister resort, but it's a free shuttle ride and only about 4 minutes - if swimming in the ocean is your thing.

If you are looking for any tips let me know. From Cruise lines, Hawaii, Mexico, Bahamas, Virgin islands, etc. I have a lot of experience with some very good places and let you know where not to look as well.
