Awesome to see the game getting more content, but honestly, I never really revisit games like this. They're incredible as one-and-done experiences. Savor the moment, finish nearly everything, and then move on. Once the story's been told and the world's been fully explored, the magic's kind of gone for me. At that point, I'd rather the devs just channel that energy into a full-fledged sequel.

I want to like this game, but having to dodge or parry every attack is just so tiresome. I’ve heard the story is great…

I’ll try changing those accessibility settings and see if I can find a toggle that alleviates the tediousness of having to learn each characters resource and interdependencies with elements and attributes and and and…

I was told this is like Persona 5, which I enjoyed, but when I reached act 2 I was ready to watch a YouTube summary of the story and call it a day.

watching a youtube summery probably won't help. The story is very personal, metaphorical, and done through allegory, and subtext. you do need to play it, as so many little things add up. Casual remarks people make, have much deeper meanings in hindsight.
ton of stuff is not expressly said.
but in terms of plot, its actually extremely simple, and some of it a bit nonsensical.

the actual presentation of it in game can be hit or miss. As noted, the pacing is horrible. The cutscenes are great, and extremely well acted. but a bit disjointed.
for example the super unnatural flow of camping cutscenes.

if there is a walkthrough to streamline the pacing, that would be great. to tell you where and when to go places, to smooth out the collectathon, and not waste time on overly strong enemies, until they are easy to beat, or where to beeline for big powerups.
the games playtime is probably cut to 1/3, if you don't waste time retreading the same ground over and over, every time you get a new transport method to see whats unlocked, and instead just went straight to the good stuff.

Not sure if this has been posted, but holy shit this game's a masterpiece. Renoir/Aline singing the same lyrics but with opposite meanings

I wanted to bring back up how great this song is. the lyrics are incredible.

The sing fighting is insane.

Stop loving me
I will always love you
Let go of this brush, leave this canvas
Renoir/Aline

I will always paint
Stop painting
Let go of this brush, leave this canvas
Renoir/Aline

Burning colors,
Fire red, life taken
Painting that I cannot see
Close your eyes, there remains black

In black, his sad eyes
Through the gold, his laughter persists
In every color, a part of him
Still loving him, even though he's not here anymore

Painting love
Painting life
Cry in color
On the web our love remains
I love you

Painting love
Painting life
Cry in color
On the web our love is dying
I love you

Love, dream, cry
Love, stay, cry
Back embraced

Love, dream, cry
Love, let go, cry
Back deleted

Continue toto love
Continue painting
Reach out and beg
Come back (x2)

In every shadow, his face
In each line, its passage
If our pulsations play out of time
My love watches, waits
In every burst, his sweet laughter
In every color, his smile
If our pulsations play out of time
My love stays, waits

Painting
Rature
Painting
In Chiaroscuro

Painting
Breakage
Painting
In Chiaroscuro

Aline
In Chiaroscuro
Renoir
In Chiaroscuro

Alicia
In Chiaroscuro
Back
In Chiaroscuro

Stop loving me
I will always love you
Let go of this brush, leave this canvas
Renoir/Aline

I will always paint
Stop painting
Let go of this brush, leave this canvas
Renoir/Aline

Burning colors
, Fire red, life taken
Together, in the dark
Let's open our eyes.let's look for hope

Your hand in mine
Our pain is ticking away
Together, in the future
We will paint Light-Dark

Painting love
Painting life
Cry in color
On the web our life is written
I love you

Painting love
Painting life
Cry in color
On the web our life is written
Farewell (x2)
Farewell

Great soundtrack and a well deserved win for Lorien Testard. A personal battle music favourite of mine is Rain from the Ground.

I was very critical of the game, but I think it does deserve most of its wins. A part of it is the nature of the categories.

like Elden ring might be a better game overall.. but, soundtrack, performances, etc? e 33 does actually deserve most of its individual wins.

there is no "world design" category. where elden ring would deserve it. but e 33 wouldn't as much.
categories for specific game mechanics also lacking. "game systems". "rgp mechanics". "player choice". etc.

major problem.
Clair obscura: e 33 is not independent. neither was ballxpit. (devolver digital,.)

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clair_Obscur:_Expedition_33#cite_note-4 is a 2025 role-playing video game developed by French studio Sandfall Interactive and published by Kepler Interactive.

Kepler interactive, published Cat quest 3, absolver, sifu, scorn, pacific drive, flintlock,
they recently took in Tactical adventures, and will be publishing Solasta 2.

So they didn't actually deserve these two.
• Best Debut Indie Game
• Best Independent Game

for the record, Mealle wasn't even the best performance in e33 itself... Charlie cox and his mo-cap actor were far better.
• Best Performance (Jennifer English)

Expedition 33 definitely isn't on the same level as Elden Ring. That said, when you look at the last decade, there are really only a handful of true "game of the decade" contenders: Elden Ring, The Witcher 3, Baldur's Gate 3, and Expedition 33. And honestly, Elden Ring has a very real case for being the greatest video game ever made, not just the best of the past ten years. So the comparison isn't all that fair.

Because of that context, I think Expedition 33 absolutely deserved the awards it received. Especially when you consider how much outright dogshit we've had over the past five years outside of BG3. E:33 has an incredible soundtrack, but even then I wouldn't put it above iconic pieces like Limgrave, Liurnia of the Lakes, or other Elden Ring themes.

Elden Ring is a flat, unquestionable 10/10. Expedition 33 was hovering around a 9.5/10 for me until the third act, where it drops closer to a 9. That third act definitely hurts it, in a way that's very reminiscent of BG3's act three issues. Elden Ring, by contrast, remains exceptional from start to finish. The only real "tarnish" on it is the DLC, and even that barely dents the overall experience.

Is that really fair? Does independent mean no publishing help? There are a lot of independent films that require some distribution help, even some companies that specialize in distributing indie films. Devolver seems exactly like that but I do think they have a development arm? Unless independent can only mean self published on Steam.

even if we say the publisher didn't fund anything, nor provide any assistance in either hiring or getting people in touch with backend, servers, etc or any other technical aspects.. and was JUST distribution. that still is an unfair advantage in a popularity contest like the game awards. where that greater distribution will result in popularity, notoriety and thus votes.

Yeah I mean that’s fair too. I don’t know where the line is or the specific criteria of the category.

Optional DLC boss is hilarious. Watch out for the stack of Barbapapa's

It makes you very peaceful, doing next to no damage, just like the 70s children’s show

Elden Ring and E33 are both strongest where the other's weakest which makes it more about what you want from a game. I'd go Elden Ring purely for replayability and amount of hours you can get out of it, but wouldn't think anyone's crazy for liking E33 more.

Also surprised at people thinking it fell apart in the 3rd act. Verso's conversation with the little boy is one of the biggest gut punches in any story ever, and the side content adds so much depth to everything else

Patch came out just in time for me to start Act 3 (yeah, I know, I'm late) and also enjoy the fuck out of that live une via a t`aimer performance. Holy shit what a goddamn banger of a song. I fucking love this game, even though I'm god awful at timing parries. The music, setting, story, turn-based style, just fucking everything is exactly the shit I enjoy.
