Again, stop thinking rationally - this isn't about revenue, it's corporate theater.

They're clutching at legal action because it looks decisive to non-gaming investors who don't understand the ecosystem. Going after "IP infringement" sounds like protecting valuable assets, when it's really just expensive procrastination.

Any pivot to revenue-sharing or cooperation would require admitting incompetence and failure, at least on some level. They cannot do that - not at any cost, as it would paint a target on them.

I've seen this before in failing publishers. If you know how they operate - this isn't the least bit surprising.
This is also about sending a message. We are hyper focused on the EQ aspect of all this, but they also have a lot of other IPs they don't want to have to worry about emulators on. If people are too scared about RL consequences it will have a significant chilling effect.

I doubt it will have a chilling effect.

In the long run? Maybe not. In the short run? It absolutely will. If there is no settlement the THJ devs are going to be put through the wringer. A lifetime of wage garnishment or chapter 7 and 7 years of eating shit. Are memberberries worth ruining your life over?

Ask yourself who is playing EMU everquest and you will find the answer.

Fair but honestly I dont see any of their games other than LOTRO due to the Tolkien license having a EMU audience.

I dont know if they are crazy enough to think that, the others might be right, its just a show for the money folk to keep the faucet on for now.

Its a sinking ship. the longer they can blame THJ and drag out the lawsuit the longer they keep the lights on.

I too hope that this stunt by Daybreak kills EverQuest as well. EQ needs to be put out of its misery. Norrath will live on via Emu servers anyways.

It didn't have to be this way. None of it is the player's fault. It all goes back to Smedley who has not shipped a successful game since EverQuest 2 in 2004.

DCUO was 2011. and Smedley hasn't worked there since 2015, so no idea what point about any of that is

something funny that I dont think people realize, is that they've had "The Heroes Journey" on live servers when you login to a level 1 for a while I think

By far the funniest thing any of have ever seen.

hey man I'm just amused by these dev's lack of creativity and the amount of things they picked up from other places over the years and slapped their names on. Personally I can't wait for these bums to be ass-pounded by the long dick of copyright law

also a little birdie told me they apparently had hidden channels that they removed from their discord, then remade but only the VC channels. What do you have to hide brothers?

It must suck to know they are making more a month than you at DBG.

Smedley was in charge of the EverQuest franchise from its early success all the way through its decline, and the results speak for themselves. As president of SOE, he led every major decision, from the disappointing direction of EverQuest 2 to the hype and eventual cancellation of EQ Next, while failing to adapt to what players actually wanted or to learn from games like World of Warcraft. Under his leadership, SOE became known for missed opportunities, stalled projects, and a lack of clear vision. The franchise declined so badly that Sony eventually sold off SOE and rebranded it as Daybreak Games to save face. Smedley wasn’t just in the room, he was the one steering the ship.

The buck stops with Smedley. He got lucky with EQ and has not been able to replicate that success while continuing to be gainfully employed as a "leader" in the industry. In almost any other industry, especially one that prioritizes performance, accountability, or tangible outcomes, John Smedley's track record would have ended his executive career years ago.

Yes you caught me, I work at DBG. I would have gotten away with it if it wasn't for you dastardly kids.

Is not bait, one of the things they deleted was their repository of custom skins that they were importing. Remember when they added all those skins and oops some of them were from live? uhoh.jpg
