How sad it must be to realize more people would rather solo the PoTime than drag their asses thru anything they are currently releasing.
I'm sure they'd have a lot more players if it was free. It's not exactly a like for like comparison.

Yeah, I would never have played THJ if it cost money, there are too many other "new" games to play, if I am going to spend money (I haven't spent money on an MMO in ~10 years). If I want nostalgia, I can go play a plethora of old games I already own for free.

Does daybreak release subscription information through the parent company during disclosures?

THJ needs to request subscription info for the past 4 years then leak it so we have proof they've ran the game into the ground.

The discovery process at trial will be a PR disaster for Daybreak.

Shit I dropped about $200 on this server when I was all hot into it. Just buying bags and other shit for all my dudes. I mean once you have one of those 100 slotters, you cant live without. And im only a small fish in a big pond. And im usually pretty restrained when it comes to dropping cash for in game purchases like this. And they sure got me, lol. Im sure many people dropped much more than that, especially for those combine shitty green and blue augs into legendary augs, one use items they had for sale. Some of those augs were BIS and cost 100K PP in upwards to 300K PP at the end when I quit. And the augs were the only items worth a damn that you could not level up just by playing.

I mean the server was F2P, but they sure made it easy to donate for some real nice quality of life shit. Im sure they made a nice mint off of this server.

The stupid part about all this is when DBG puts out a product I like, I play it. Emus have just never felt quite right, though I have enjoyed them from time to time.
The bullshit from P99 and other EMUs have always kept me from putting any serious time into them. I'd rather play an official server as long as it's good.

Oh I agree completely. Most of the zone remakes they've done have been ass.
Why couldn't they just give us better textures of the original zones? That's literally all we asked for.

I feel the same way for the most part. Ive tried a few here and there but like you it was always meh, no people, etc... The P99 shit was way over the top OG EQ. Even aside all the dev favoritism and the accusations of RMT, it was jsut TOO much og for me, lol.

But THJ was different. The server was hopping and the idea of 3 classes all wrapped into one was really cool.

I worked on EQ emus for 10 years so here's my take.

I don't blame Daybreak for shutting down emus that are profiting from their IP like this. Some of us emu guys are mad because they're not only profiting from Daybreak's assets but also our emu dev work. They broke the big rule. This brings heat down on all of us. The reason why there are not many more emu servers is BECAUSE we can't profit from them, and even if we could legally it's still a shitty thing to do. THJ's contributions to their own server/game amount to like 3% of the total code and asset base. Make up any number you like here but it's a single digit for sure.

I however do not like long copyrights. I would generally agree that EQ's earliest eras should be public domain by now, however THJ is using a much more modern client. The server wouldn't exist if the modern clients weren't available. Thanks to evil Disney copyrights last an eternity so that's the law.

My motivation for spending so much time on the emus is to preserve the game before it's lost forever. I consider myself a game preservationist/archeologist first and foremost. Most of my work is server agnostic and just researching how the game worked at a highly detailed level, and collecting mob stats. (I'm mostly retired from this) Daybreak is a company and thus only concerned about profit. EQ to me is a great cultural artifact that requires preservation. I want people 1000 years from now to be able to play it as it was like in 1999. When Daybreak changes the game over time, this is damaging the cultural artifact. It's like rewriting an old masterpiece of literature for a modern audience. I tried to save EQ from being erased. Modern EQ is not real EQ to me. If they kept a real classic server running then Project 1999 and TAKP wouldn't need to exist.

I did receive some donations for my emu work. The sum amounted to a very rough estimate of less than 10 cents an hour for my labor if you count every hour from 2013, which I would have done regardless. I never asked for a donation; people just offered unsolicited. I do think small unsolicited donations are fine and hopefully this doesn't make me a hypocrite. Anyway, hopefully Daybreak's lawyers don't go crazy with the litigation, because there are no winners in that scenario.
Bro idk if it’s smart to say you took unsolicited donations for an eqemu server on a forum that’s literally in the lawsuit. Just sayi, stay safe out there bro

The ROI on Tlps have got to be massive when you just recycle older ruleset as they require almost no dev time. So it doesnt make sense why they would not be releasing at least 2 tlps a year separated by 4-6 months to try and maximize the players who want to play different rulesets.
You need to account for infrastructure cost and maintenance.
