Yeah, I’m upset. I actually care about the soul of this game, not just how much cash it can squeeze out of loyal players. You seem upset. Did you just assume they would support the game indefinitely?
How do you suggest they go about attracting new players to a 26 year old game? Honestly, what course of action do they have besides just milking it for more cash? There isn't some new generation out there just waiting for more Everquest. In fact, the original players are probably dying off at this point.
You bring up EQ being 26 years old like that automatically means it's doomed. But look at World of Warcraft. It came out in 2004, just five years after EverQuest, and it's still going strong today. Blizz didn't sit around complaining that players were too old or that no new generation would show up. They invested, they modernized, and they found ways to bring people back, like WoW classic.
If you claim to be a steward of a beloved world, you don't get to shrug and say "eh, too old" when people expect you to take care of it. Daybreak’s internal "death clock" shows they had no vision for the future. They didn't plan to evolve EQ; they planned to bleed it dry and walk away.
Could EQ have attracted a ton of new players? Maybe not millions, but with real effort like updated graphics, better onboarding, and community-driven content, it could have stayed alive and even pulled in new fans who love retro experiences. Instead, they chose to act like slumlords, ignoring the leaks and blaming the tenants when the building finally falls apart.
So no, the problem isn’t the age of the game. The problem is the greed and lack of courage from the people running it.
