Brahma Brahma and anyone else that uses a 4ktv to play computer games on. Is it possible to play computer games on a 4k tv at a lower resolution to increase the performance? Does it look good or totally fucked. Reason I am asking is with a 1080ti you are just getting around 60fps at 4k but in some enviorments like raiding it might not be able to handle that. Can you lower the resolution to increase the fps?

You could do 1080p I'm sure but I doubt anything in between.

I imagine it works fine just like watching 720/1080p content.

Most games I lower the rez to 1080p on my 65" 4k as I prefer faster fps. In a living room setting, unless Im really close to the TV it does not matter anyhow. More than a few feet away games look just great @ 1080p as 4k on my eyes. Wow looks as good @ 4k interpolated (from 1080p signal) as my old 1080p TV.

Won't a 4k TV upscale a 1080p source anyway as best as it can? Or can you turn that option off in settings? Or the receiver you are running it through.

You can do 1080p and it looks just as sharp. Any other res will be blurry.

That is only in some cases. Many games you can get around 60fps with a 1080ti. Some games though in some situations can't handle it which is why I was curious. Thanks for all the responses everyone.

I honestly felt stupid asking the questions but the last time I didn't research and ask questions I got buttfucked with buying RDRAM.
If youre shoppin for a 4k TV to possibly use for some gaming on a PC, you may want to consider a TV that supports 4k @ 60hz and chroma 4:4:4. Just be prepared to potentially compromise on input lag, pixel response etc when compared to PC monitors.

See here: Best TVs For PC Monitors - Spring 2017: Reviews

For many sorts of standard PC monitor type of use cases (up close detail for reading & browsing text) a 4k TV can make a great monitor with lots of workspace.

It for sure depends on the user, and the source. I just got an LG OLED 4k TV, and watching 1080p vs 4k is very noticeable, even at 10ft away. Both are gorgeous, but I can tell when its 4k. And this is coming from a guy who used to watch VHS quality SD rips of shows, "to save space".

I love playing WoW, through my Steam Link, on my new TV because it looks way way better than my 5+ year old ASUS computer monitors, even though those are 1080p as well. OLED wins every time! Wife likes to watch me raid too.

I did not know you could wow through steam link
Once in Steam Link, just go up to the power button and then click exit big picture mode or whatever. It'll then just exit out and be a picture of your desktop. Then if you have a mouse and keyboard already attached, you can just do whatever you want. Browse the web, porn, WoW, etc. Controllers won't work at that point, I assume until you get back into a game that supports controllers.

Steam controller still works in that mode! I've also had luck adding non-steam games to Steam and launching them through the Big Picture client. And this doesn't belong here, but I'm trying to see if my Sony Gold headphones will work with my Samsung TV using the BT dongle. Haven't taken a dive in to that yet.

Dunno who will buy these when you can buy a 1080, or a 1080ti for 30% more performance, but first aftermarket Vega matches a 1080 pulling 532 Watts OC'd:
