Was going to bite on that Dell deal but it's only in store now and none within 250 miles of me :(

Maybe something good will come around Monday.

I guess a question that deserves asking. I'm looking to get 1440p 144hz, which will require a video card upgrade most likely (I have a 4gb gtx 960). I sit about arms reach from my monitor. How noticeable would the difference between 24 and 27 inch be?

Honestly IMO pretty noticeable. I got a 24" on sale and I regret it due to all the UI/text sizes being kinda small sometimes. 27-30" would be perfect.

I mean it's not a deal stopper for me but if you are used to bleary eyed binge gaming or want low eye strain I would go 27 you can.

Seem to be a lot of monitor options and I can't decide what is best for me. I suppose I'm the only one that can answer that.

IPS vs cheaper TN panels
60hz vs 144hz
Gsync vs No Gsync
1080p vs 1440p
24" vs 27"

IPS, 144hz, Gsync, 1440p, 27" is of course the best, but might be overkill. I game on a 970 at 1080p right now and think its fine. But I don't know what I don't know and my LG OLED 55" I just bought blows my computer monitors away and that's just a little weird to me. I got that on super discount earlier this year, and have enjoyed using the Steamlink with it. 1080p on that thing is gorgeous.

My first thought was to stick with 1080p, but up refresh rate to 144hz with Gsync? With this being powered by a gtx 970, would it be a decent upgrade?

Eh maybe a little. The refresh rate with GSync really smooths things out if you can push past 60 fps.

I personally think 24" is the limit for 1080p. Especially compared to a 4K TV, I think you would feel like the 27" isn't competitive.

Well, I'm on a 970, so I'm not pushing past 60fps really in anything. So then at that point Gsync is pointless? It's kind of what I figured, but just as I'm still riding out my i5-2500k cpu, I'll keep riding out these old monitors and my 970. Maybe upgrade everything in another year if I ever decide to play a game that needs it.

Another dumb question where I get to show how little computer knowledge I have.

I no longer have headphones with an 1/8"/3.5mm jack on it, only USB ones. Is it possible to run a sound in thru the sound card on a 1/8"/3.5mm input and somehow play it out thru thru the usb microphone?

My pocket pod/amp for my guitar only has an 1/8" jack. Kind of a long way around but I'm too lazy to research and buy a new set of hedphones for that.

I'm keeping my 970 GTX and 850 EVO from my current desktop, plus a couple storage HDDs. I'll be waiting for NVIDIA's next series of cards before I replace the 970. I'm sticking with air cooling unless you guys have a good reason for me to go otherwise. The blu ray drive is just so I can rip my blu rays at some point, but I may just skip it.

Looking for any suggestions, especially on the motherboard. That was just me looking at a few sub $200 motherboards and just picking what seemed decent. I'd like to keep this to $1000 or under, but will go over for something that's especially good.

Is it worth going the 8600k vs last years 7600k? You think you'll use those additional threads? Or I suppose for future proofing, sometime in the next 5 years I suppose someone will use them, right?

If given the choice, I’d go for the 8600k. It has more cores and will be better over the long haul.

I've had my 2500k for nearly 6 years now and I'd like this build to last a long time as well. I was considering the 8700k, but I'm not convinced it would get me all that much more time for the extra $100+.

In 5 years you might kick yourself but meh. It's not a massive upgrade really

Build looks good otherwise to me

You can always add the blue ray easily later. Do you really need out when shit like plex exists?

Goddammit. Dropped the blu ray and going to the 8700k. Might as well do this right.
If you're going with the 8700k I'd recommend a better cooler. Only point of getting the 8700k over the 8700 is to overclock and the chip runs very hot while overclocked. Either you should get a good water cooler or go with a noctua nh-d15 for air cooling.

I already have the 212 evo on my current build, so I'll just use that for the time being. If it proves to not be good enough once I figure out how much I want to overclock it, I'll look for something better.

See for yourself, but the 8700k runs very hot even with the best of coolers.

Good luck on the silicon lottery. Hopefully yours doesn't require very much voltage for a decent overclock.

Hopefully. I'd rather not have to delid it if I can help it, but that's probably just wishful thinking.
