I'm thinking about getting a better second monitor. It's basically used for watching videos (twitch, Netflix) and all the non game tasks. I just have a super old like 24" 1080p one, and I kind of want something nicer. Any recommendations?

Bonus points if you can recommend a mount for it so it doesn't have to sit on my desk

lulz why are you bothering w/ the shitty 1tb blue?

yea, just get a 1tb ssd since you want to have fast loading games and a 8tb drive for future expansions/data (move your played once a year games to the hdd w/ steam), even a 4tb, but like the 1tb?

Fuck me it is still information. I still wish I had my HDD from my 233mhz Pentium 2 that I had all my EQ screen shots on it. Pisses me off to no end.

So what are is best 1440p/4k monitors? Might pickup one of the revised Nvidia cards next month and Ill need a new monitor to go with as my current one is a 27 inch 1080p.

I bought this a few months ago and it's been excellent. 4k, ips, freesync, under $300. Max 60hz though and the stand it comes with doesn't adjust up or down.

I'm building a PC for work, or if... Its a bit more expensive, I may switch out my home PC or my g/f's and send my old one to work instead and keep the new one. The goal is to just be able to play most games on max settings. 4k Would be awesome, but whats needed "according to the internet" is some 2k+ machine to push frames out nicely which is exactly where I dont want to push my budget.

The two screens that I have in my office are Samsung MU6300 65"(s), and if Im not mistaken - they have a 28ms input lag. How much is that really going to affect game play if I wont be playing anything other than an MMO or similar? Ive hooked my computers up to TV's before, but never took it seriously. The TV's are usually just there for franchise ad's, etc. I have two monitors on my desk, but those are handled by a streaming device for our network security purposes. I may use the TV's as dual monitors since theyre stacked, but not likely.

I've certainly fell off on PC specs since the last time I built a PC, but I generally build one that lasts for around 5-6 years, but I'm not sure where this will go since most of you appear to have in depth knowledge about parts. I'm looking at the 2600 RTX Nvidia card with 8 gigs, price point around 350. Better options that arent four times that price? I just cant see myself paying 1200 bucks for a video card anymore.

I've never really followed AMD and always kind of stuck with Intel, but I'm not getting a huge price difference in the processors anymore. The expensive ones seem as though they are probably overkill. Is it worth it to stick to intel? Was looking at the $200'ish processors, but again, I have some room. I just dont think anything I'm going to be highly interested in playing is going to require more than that. Not the biggest fan of FPS's for example.

Memory, DDR4 at somewhere around 3666? 8x2 sticks seem cheap enough, but not really sure why some DDR4-3666's are $140 for 16 gigs, and some are $450 with the same specs? Would any of you recommend going to 32 gigs? What about the speed, is that high even necessary?

Motherboard, I have no idea on.. Probably again, something around the $200 range or less that lets me take advantage of the faster ram. I'm not going to run Dual VC's or anything obnoxious.

Water cooling looks neat, but again.. for what I do, is it necessary? I just want it to do its job and be quiet.

Power supply, 750w Im guessing?

SSD m.2 terabyte. Are the older SSD's that much slower? Is the m.2 version a must have?

Windows 10, .. Im kind of skiddish on 10 for gaming - but I like it on my work computer. What is the least restrictive version when it comes to networking and playing games? I rarely boot leg a game anymore, but if I'm unsure of the title - I'll try it before buying it, definitely.

So the good news is that the 3000 series AMD CPUs set to release July 7 are looking to be as good if not better performers than what Intel offers, operate at lower wattage, and they are definitely at better price points, too. The bad news is that benchmarks for price/performance and OC capability aren't available yet. So everyone's sort of waiting to find out which one is the best bang for the buck.

Regarding memory, AMD has stated this:
211913

Regarding mobos, it seems like the X570s coming out will all start around $200 and up. But existing X470s and B450s are perfectly serviceable. I have an Asus B450-F, but MSI's B450 Tomahawk is pretty great for mid-range along with some OC ability. Here is a good tier list:

Its roughly 1400-1500 dollars. Not where I wanted to be, but not terrible either.

2080ti if you want to run 4K at any decent FPS. And even that card will struggle. 1060 and 2060 are basically 1080p cards, MAYBE you can push 1440p with some graphical downgrades.

I would still hold out for the 3K versions of AMD procs in a month or two. They might be a bit more pricey, but lb for lb they will be THAT much better from all things that have been released. You might spend $250 for the new 8/16 proc but it will have better performance per core than their current offerings for sure. I would definitely wait it out, but thats just me. Some people just want their shit NOW.

Edit: You also want to include some standard 7200RPM storage drives in there as well. Pick yourself up a 3-4TB one at least for common bullshit you want to store like music, pictures, memes, porn, etc... I only have a 500GB SSd and what I do is keep the OS on there of course and I also instal one game on there, whatever im playing ATM. When I do another game I do a swap, basically move the folder off the SSD to storage and move the other folder in its place. 5000 gb gives me room for 2 large games, but I never really play more than one game at a time.

I think that's generally good, and you will preserve upgradeability for a 3000 series CPU. Keep in mind, the 3600X is going to cost ~$249 and should outperform the 2700X (the base 3600 at $199 might outperform it, too). If you can find a good price on a 1TB Samsung 970+ Evo, go for it--no regrets here on NVME.

/agree with Mkopec regarding 4K. The 2080TI is the only card that can sort of hack it at ~60fps.

IMO the 2060 is fine for most 1440p--you might want to turn down shadows or something every once in a while. I think the 2060 and Vega 56 are very similar in that they are overkill for 1080p and handle 1440p on most games adequately. There is also a wait-and-see on prices on GPUs right now, because AMD is introducing its 5700 Navis and Nvidia is expected to change up pricing when it introduces it's "super" versions of some of it's cards.

In general, wait a month or two until Ryzen 3Ks release.
If youre getting a new system its looking like a good bet to avoid Intel this round IMO. Intel will be back on top on desktops prob 2021+. Enjoy AM4 Zen2/3/4 until then.
(CPU)
  • Wait a month or two for prices to drop, & Ryzen 3K reviews to come out. Even the lowest of new 6 core Ryzen 3s should be faster than a Ryzen 2700x or the more expensive Intel equiv. But if you decide to cheap out on CPU and Max out your GPU budget you should be able to find a fire sale 2600x.

(Motherboard)
  • Wait a month to see how expensive X570 MB are. PCIe4 might be worth the month wait to get it for a few $ extra, you will get best upgradeability later. But If you decide to cheap out a lil, might find a deal on X470.

(GPU)
  • Wait a month some for NVIDIA to spank AMD Navi. Old RTXs should drop when refresh arrives since Navi sucks compared to NVIDIA, will prob suck more against NVIDIAs rumoured coming refresh.
(RAM)
  • Go for 2x 8 for 16GB by default.
  • Do not sweat RAM timings too much, def avoid lower timings if price increase is high.
  • DDR4 RAM @ 3600 CL16 is ideal sweet spot for performance to get for Ryzen 3k.
  • DDR4 3200MHz CL14 is ideap sweet spot perf for Ryzen 2k.
  • More expensive RAM has faster timings: ie DDR4 @ 3600 and CL16 is a lot faster and than DDR4 @ 3600 CL19.
  • In general: do NOT get 32GB RAM and never cheap out on 8GB either.... unless know what are doing.

(Cooler)
  • AMD stock coolers are ok but you might want an ok Tower cooler. For an office even an old Hyper 212 EVO cools better and is quieter than AMD stock coolers.
(Power Supply)
  • Depends on GPU you get. As low as 450 W or 750W if you get a mid range card. Get 80% + efficiency, decent brand (ie Corsair)

(SSD)
  • Wouldnt sweat overly type of SSD too much for gaming. M2 drives are nice for faster boot .

Look @ Fractal Design cases.
Unless youre building a m-itx system just get a bigger, quieter, better tower cooler.
Do not bother with 3733 RAM for a Ryzen 2700. 3200 MHz CL14 is enough unless you plan to replace it with a Ryzen 3k in a month.

Yeah I was gonna recommend the CM212, I just love that thing. Ive had it in like 4-5 builds so far and not one fucking problem, wait I take that back, a fan went out on one that was like 5 yrs old,(2500K build from a while ago) lol. But they are quiet, easy to clean out (important thing) with some pressure air, and work really well. They have a solid brass contact too, which helps and they are dirt cheap.

no idea if it's old tim(it looked "ok")(replaced anyway with just as5) or ps just old, i mean it's a freaking 15yr old thermaltake lulz, no idea why i had such a crappy ps in there, but it didn't complain for this long.
