Haha I should have asked sooner. Why have I seen that it won't run at full capacity without dual channel mode or whatever?
It will run in dual channel if both slots are filled. Well, both paired slots. 1&3 or 2&4. Otherwise, zero performance difference.

Well that makes things a lot simpler. I was under the impression that my PC was underperforming because of the RAM.

So the new game plan is:
-Get a beefy cooler for current CPU and overclock it.
-Get a new video card, whenever I can get my hands on one.
-And buy a 1440p monitor.

I'm just now starting to research options and I appreciate the feedback. By the time I'm ready to buy I should have everything lined up.

you have to list your case or if you don't know, take a pic and we'll tell you what it is, the drawback of a beefy cooler is fitment.

This is my case, just the newer version. The dimensions should still be the same... And it looks like it won't fit the Noctua D15. It can never be easy can it? Would the Hyper Cooler 212 allow a little bit of overclocking?

Next time I'm just buying the biggest case on the market haha.

Stick with the Hyper 212 or consider buying a new case. That case lists max cooler height at 150mm, with means no NH-D15, U14, or even U12A. AIOs are also limited to 120mm, which probably isn't worth buying either (280/360 is what you want ). A good case is something that you can take from build to build. I kept my last set of cases for over 10 years.

yea what Jovec Jovec said, since youre intent on upgrading anyway soonish, start with the case, get a more modern case with usb 3.1 and usb c, many modern cases now are also "wider" to accomodate

1. 140mm fan in back

2. vertical gpu mounting (bling bling)

3. extensive cable management

and as a consequence, they allow for even the massive n d15 to fit.

or you can just live ghetto style and buy a noctua d15 and install it w/ the side panel off

Had a complete new build pieced together on PCPartPicker with the idea that I'd unload my current computer on Hardware Swap for a few bucks to offset the cost a little. Then I realized that re-using a bunch of my old parts, like my 970 EVO m.2 and my power supply, and my case was saving me more money than I was getting back from it in the new build. Sucks that I'm gonna not go water cooling, or RGB at all, but it saves a ton of money.

For the new build, instead of 3600 C18 RAM try for 3600 CL16. Small but noticeable benefit. I prefer Noctua for air coolers, even if they are not the best, you cannot beat their support. For example if AM5 needs a new bracket, send them your proof of purchase and they will send you the right bracket no charge.

You could probably tune the ram timings from 18 to 16, but that'd be quite a hassle to save ten bucks.

Considering doing a very small budget upgrade.

e.g. I've currently got a 4th Gen Haswell setup, and was thinking of staying in the old Gen

Basically want to run Half Life: Alyx

says my CPU is junk

1609185453212.png

I have a Vive already, but I'd probably opt for the Index controllers at some point... so I'd like the PC upgrade to be cheap as fuck, like $300 or less

I was thinking of buying a 4790K with an after Market cooler and doubling up on Ram, toss the 4x4=16 and buy 4x8 32 GB DDR3

Although looking at the specs, I wonder that the extra Ram would even be worth while, as opposed to say buying a more expensive used 4790K that was tested overclocked and stable at 4800 (and upgrading the ram means sticking my current Ram into a drawer to collect dust anyway....)

Otherwise to move away from Haswell, I'd need a new board, CPU, and DDR4, I can't see doing that for less than $700, unless you guys have suggestions.

Of course, maybe I can just overclock the 4670K ... hmmm

1609186590822.png

I guess I answered that myself while I typed this, I completely forgot I had the unlocked I5

Maybe just an after market cooler like:

i have the bequiet 4, so far my favorite cooler

i have a ryzen 5 on high oc, and the damn fans don't even spin up

i actually have 2, one was an annoying install b/c the case was not modern (it actually opens from the right side), so it was more difficult installing it w/ mb installed, i had to install it first, then install the mb.

the second one was on a modern nzxt 710 case and that was amazingly easy.

i also love the long ass screw driver they give, ha

Obviously the price of a used 4790k and DDR3 matters, but I wouldn't throw too much money at a 4670k. Case, cooler, GPU, PSU - sure, all things you can take to your next build. You could even add an NVMe drive via PCIe x4 adapter - it means your GPU will run at x8 but that won't matter, and you can use a modified bios if you can find one that will allow your Haswell chipset to boot off of it. This video is a year old but shows where Devil's Canyon CPUs stand against Ryzen 3000 and Intel 9000 series. The 4790k definately held up better than the 4690k did. GPU also matters, as a better GPU will show a bigger difference between CPUs. Your 1070 would benefit from a better CPU, but not as much as it would if you a 2070 or better.

$300 is a tough upgrade, but $450 is doable (before you sell your old stuff). Newegg has had the 3600 for $200 recently. $100 or less for 16GB DDR4. $150 or less for a b550 mobo. You might also be able to find a decent deal on a used Ryzen 3000 CPU as more 5000 series become available.

Yes, a friend is lending me his delidding kit and TIM, I purchased one of these:

assuming it is compatible with the heat sink I just bought, I'll run the die naked.

Thoughts on upgrading the Ram, would a game really use 16+ Gbs? Would it actually enhance performance?

if you were upgrading to a new system, sure 32gbs why not, it's cheap enough, but youre already running 16gbs, that money could be spent elsewhere, imo if youre intent on upgrading to 32gbs, you might as well just get a more 2020 pc then, but you won't see a performance gain, gaming

yeah, I'm reconsidering.

I could probably drop $300 on Facebook Marketplace for a Coffee Lake setup and achieve virtually the same results and have access to m.2 and DDR4 ....et. al.

I think I'm going to bite the bullet on this instead, the turbo on an i7-8700k is already 4.7 before overclocking, I can still delid it and drop that aftermarket cooler on it and probably get it up to 5, plus I have a bench case so I can do ATX, Micro-ATX, ITX anyway
