I'm building a new machine for 2 main purposes:
1. Box at least 54 toons in EQ on an emulator server - it's all about CPU and RAM, old EQ could give a shit about video card
2. Tether my Quest 2 VR headset to my PC to play VR skyrim and other VR games. This will require a decent video card and that's why I propose the card below.

It's basically this parts list but I changed the mobo to Asus and I won't spend $3k on a video card... swapped it to a 3060 after reading up on a "good" but not money is no option video card. https://pcpartpicker.com/guide/cDscCJ/glorious-amd-gamingstreaming-build

AMD Ryzen 9 5900X 3.7 GHz 12-Core Processor
G.Skill Ripjaws V 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3600 CL16 Memory The one thing that gives me pause on this is it's 2X16gb chips. I'll have to buy all new RAM if I want to get to 128 GB on 4 slots some day but even with the RAM hog EQ is I can't see needing more than 64 GB. Should I swap to 32 gb chips instead of these 16s?
EVGA GeForce RTX 3060 12 GB XC GAMING Video Card
SeaSonic FOCUS 850 W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-modular ATX Power Supply

EK EK-AIO 240 D-RGB 66.04 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler
This cooler is out of stock, any suggestions on a good alternative?

Fractal Design Meshify 2 ATX Mid Tower Case
I want a different case. I want one with a handle so it's easier to carry around - like a center handle on the top of the case. I'm cool with a BIG tower case too. I want lots of space, lots of airflow but I don't need extra space just for extra space. Suggestions appreciated.

I'm gonna put windows 10 on it.
I have a 1 TB samsung SSD extra laying around to put a fresh install on it for the new machine. Is NVME worth it? I went through a rash of hard drive crashes with Western Digital Raptor drives back in the day so if the risk factor with NVME is that much higher than a regular SSD please direct me away from them.

What yall think?

So i hear you want to buy my pc?!

Curious why a 3060 - i guess its good on vram atleast but youd be better off with a used 2080TI if youre just looking for a low end 30 series card - Whats your total budget?

I read a review that said to look for a 2080Ti. I dug around for one with no luck for a bit and went back to the 3060. I'm not crazy about used pc parts. I don't ever feel comfortable with a slight discount on a part that's used when a new one is like 10% more, particularly with no warranty.

I spent just under $2900 on the whole rig with tax and everything. Everything was easy to install but it all took MUCH longer than any other pc build I've done. I think disassembling the fractal case and verifying all the wires are routed carefully to the right things has eaten up the extra time. I REALLY like the fractal case. Soooo many pieces of it come off easily to make the install easier and obscuring cables to make the build look clean is just super sweet.

I kind of wish he built with it to see what it looks like, and to be sure on what the bottom ports do.

I think that would be great in an O11 XL if you didn't want to get one of the expensive distro plates

Built a whole new rig with 5950x, 32gb memory, etc etc, but no video card. Still using my 1080ti, but now kind of want to sell the whole thing. Certainly possible but if I figure $400 for the 1080ti, there is no way in hell someone's going to pay $2500 for the thing, and that's not counting the LL Strimmers, or the Corsair commander pro + lighting node cores I have for the RGB. Kinda stuck now. Doh.

Return everything you possibly can imo or toss it on reddit HWSWAP. It's not a bad system at all. In fact Intel is only on top for 2 months so you can technically sell your 5950X and use a 3600 until vcache is out in Jan/Feb and Intel is once again 2nd place. Your motherboard should be fine for it.

Not sure why I never thought about returning stuff. Most everything would probably be the easy returns too, since I got everything from Amazon, and just require the item, no box, no label, just dump everything back at the UPS store and be good to go.

I agree it's not a bad system at all, just have zero need for it right now, and would be neat to see it go to someone else that would get use out of it.

Edit: RIP, it's been 2 months and while I could probably get Amazon to take it all back, I'll just use it. Jeez how time flies. Might see if anyone bites off hardware swap for the whole system versus piecing it out.

You just need a GPU. If you join this Discord:

It's really not that hard to get one.

Until then, it's not like a 1080ti is bad.

Oh, I'm on multiple trackers already, I just haven't gotten any video cards since deciding to build my own PC. All my friends have gotten them though! I'm also on waitlists for EVGA still as well. Ideally, I'd get EVGA AIO 3080. I think they called it the Hybrid.

Right at the end of September, like September 28th, so it was just days before the return window extended. Again, I could absolutely talk to customer service, and do a return, but taking everything apart, boxing it up as best I can, and still having to sell 3rd party my 5950x Ryzen, might not be worth it, and just be on the lookout for a 3080.

Hindsight is always 20/20, and I absolutely wouldn't have gone RGB... it's cool for a week, and now I don't give a shit. Lol

So I grabbed a 3080 Ti at Best Buy and want to do a new build.

12600k looks like the way to go.

Thoughts?

corsair 5000d has way better airflow for a few bucks more

speaking of airflow, hyper 212? really?, if it's at 44bucks already spend a bit more and get a real big boy noctua anything (or just plerg on d15, they have the all black one for the same price)

if youre on a budget i believe the scythe fuma2 will perform about the same... but youre already buying a 400$ motherboard, so budget...

Why I posted - thanks for the recommendations!

And yeah there’s a MSI budget DDR4 board, but I figure it was worth it to get the full featured DDR5 board.

yea if youre going for airflow and air cooling, 5000d is a huge improvement and you'll have more than enough room for

if you want to go watercooling/aio (you need at least 240rad for that i5) you can also do it no issue too.

Might want to have a look at this. GN has done their year end roundups for cases and CPUs as well.

I've come to prefer the NH-D15S, because it is offset slightly to give a bit more clearance on the bottom/gpu side. This can help on GPUs with larger backplates, and you can also just add a second fan with the included clips.
