Sorry to necro a thead but I've been over Portland for the last 4 to 5 years and been contemplating places to live and last week a friend of mine put Detroit in my head over the east coast. Is it still as bad of a shit hole as it seems? I priced around on CL for rentals/sublets and it seems very doable and I am a journeyman autobody tech so I imagine I can figure out some work when I get to town but I dont know.

How truly shitty are the winters?
How's the downtown crime?
How hard is the liberalism?
dude, this is the only city that has so much footage for these types of videos

I've only been to Detroit once and it was in February. They got like 13 inches of snow in one day.

Detroit is on a fast track to looking like Eastern Europe. More Midwest cities are to follow. Cleveland and St. Louis are losing population yearly at a drastic rate.

Huh? Not even close Broski.

Winters are long, can be brutal too depending on year. Like in 2013 or 12 we had a solid month of -20F days. Winters are usually from Late Oct-Nov to Sometimes March or April at times. Usually though, they are Late Nov-March and temps are 20s-40s. To tell you the truth most winters I dont even sport a winter coat, its usually house to car, car to work type shit which does not require one. Snow wise it depends. Lately its been on the low side, but there can be years that we get dumped on. In Northern Mi we have snow belts on Lake Mi side that are brutal, they get feet of snow at a time. Bonus is we have excellent snowmobile trails in northern MI which go for hundreds if not thousands of miles. So there is that, we also have a few ski places. I actually like the season changes. We have true winter, spring, summer, fall shit going on here that I like. Summers are kinda short, sometimes hot, usually june through sept, although sometimes stretch into late Oct with the temps being in the 60s.

Gun laws are Ok here if you like guns. Have to register your handguns, easy to get CCW, just a class. In northern MI when youre camping and shit its pretty much open carry, even without a CCW. Can shoot on state land in N Mi too, as long as youre not an idiot. We have a gravel pit we go to and shoot all fucking day long. If you like fishing and boating, well not gonna tell you there is plenty of that. Lake MI side is fucking beautiful, its like Ocean of blue fresh water. Huron side is nice too, although not as nice.

Downtown is nto that bad as long as you stay away from the outskirts. Freeway takes you right downtown to bypass all the bullshit crime infested neighborhoods. I jsut dont even go down there to tell you the truth. No reason to. Aside a few sporting events, or concerts, there is no reason to go down there.

Shit lib wise, im sure detroit is chalk full, but outskirts are mostly the burbs which is a mix, never really an issue, and the more rural areas of the state are all pretty much blood red.

Last time I was in Detroit was 2011 and I was mostly downtown which is pretty nice, but I didn't see anything that compares to New Orleans. That city is a true shit hole.

I dont think there is anywhere in E europe that even closely resembles the state of the outskirts of Detroit.
Would I be an idiot if I thought I could get by without a car? I don't mind riding a bike in the snow or shitty conditions but with it being motor city I don't know if it would be a deathwish.

Bump to an old thread.

I'm going to be in Detroit for a hockey tournament this weekend. Two questions:
1. any bros out there want to get a beer?
2. anything I should really go and see while there?

Man, I'd make the trip down if I hadn't just started chemo back up this week.

mkopec is the only other forumbro I know of that lives nearby.

The Henry Ford museum is pretty cool if you have time. I've only ever been there for concerts otherwise.

To be honest I have not been downtown in a few years now, lol. Aside the sporting events which I dont give a shit about, there really is not reasons for me to go down there. I hang in the burbs, I work in the burbs and live in the burbs.

I do hear the downtown is hopping if you actually stay in the downtown area. There is a few casinos and shit, good bars, etc... But like I said I could nto tell you which ones.
Tuco Tuco is another tri-county area guy which might know.

ITs like any other major city, shit on the inside surrounded by roses. MI is fucking great.
