The real danger of Surveillance capitalism is not that the "thought police" are going to come knocking at your door, it's that companies and political organizations will use the data they collect about you to manipulate what you see, who you interact with, and therefore ultimately what you think.

Wait, please tell me about this homeless woman story!!
He had his own personal attention whoring thread. Its either in that one or somewhere in Gamergate. Short version is he took in some rando woman with a kid who was living couch to couch and did not tell the woman he was McBoltons. Even he admitted the woman freaked when she found out, but the woman was in dire enough straights that she stuck it out a bit. Manessa never told anyone how that situation ended after getting dog piled on it, but I am guessing said couch potato probably bailed at the first chance (though thats just an educated guess). Considering how vocal Manessa is about everything else he does, its pretty telling that he is mum on that topic.

But the broader point is he clearly is self conscious enough that he wont tell people he is a man, even in situations where trust is important. Thus, clearly his whole spiel about not being afraid of a lack of anonymity is a bunch of bullshit. Hes just trying to score some easy attention whore points since the religion thread dried up for him.

This is very true, and the problem is these companies keep the data no matter what you do to opt out. Once your fingerprints are out there, they are there for good and the bigger companies compile and cross reference from whatever your associates post even if you nope out. Pretty sure I am going to be put in a gulag for half the shit my automation has recorded saying, but eh the damage was already done. All you can do now is just not add to the data pile and get friends to not post about you if possible.

Gulags are for people who don't buy ammo.

Well I live in Texas and have a fair amount of guns and ammo, so I will be among the last on the trains. But lets face it, if they really go door to door for the guns your choices are going to be limited unless the people are in revolt already.

It’s scary for sure. Like how nothing is ever really “deleted”, the stupid databases are still there with your “deleted” shit present but flagged to not show. But since data is still there they can share it.

After all, if company X is paying $1 per email address, wouldn’t you sell all your deleted accounts too to boost your profit?

Something I’ve experienced before my “privacy revolution” is that I would goto a site, add things to a cart to price it out, but never give any info. Then n a day or so get emails from that company. Fucking insane. Even in the “who’s that girl” thread here, I clicked a link to a video on pornhub that ended up being deleted. When I went to my normal xvideos, that deleted video was then there as the first result on the homepage.

That’s when I said fuck this, I need privacy.

What you can do is avoid sites that use algorithmic content suggestions and block all ads.

That's all you really have to do.

What IQ does it take to avoid this.

For the small fish that works. But facebook actually will use their face recognition stuff to auto tag you in other people's photos, then use the geolocation info in those photos to add info to the file they have on you. I got tagged in a photo on FB of someone not even on my friends list and I got spam emails and recommendations from them for over a year based on the place I was at where the photo was taken. I guess the upside is a lot of it is automated, but if they have the will to do it (and they have demonstrated it) the ability of these big tech sites to make a profile to crater your life is pretty amazing in scope.

No, the choice is quite simple for me. Europe in the 30's taught everyone a lesson that should never ever be forgotten. The Jews went along quietly. It didn't work out very well for them as I recall. Unless you ask Lumi, of course.

And what would be your simple choice if they demand your guns?

This thread has my deep respect. Excellent.
Which is why this ultimately only ends one way...

Nah. For some maybe. Why rush to that outcome??

We are, in every scenario, talking about complicated and institutionally and geographically fragmented real data systems. That is point one: these are systems (or technology) first and people (or companies, governments, etc.) second.

Yes. I am suggesting the strange metaphor of a ship that is built in very definite ways, with somewhat predictable parameters regarding what can be done (energia) with that ship, but the nature and identity of the crew and captain is not predetermined.

This is not a difficult idea, I just (sorry) use too many words. A butter knife in prison has many uses; I have heard some women use vibrating washing machines to stimulate themselves to orgasm. Etc.

Who am I to judge?

SO, we have a system with certain parameters of potential "work." But what the work is, or becomes, depends on who or what is directing the system, or putting to use the system.

Let's call that the "play" in the system, and stipulate, there is no system (piece of tech) that does not have some degree of such play.

You might say, but what about a hammer? A hammer is made to pound nails, that is why people buy it, and so forth. But of course, a hammer can also get you about an inch into the back of the human skull, if you swing one decently. Every "tool" has a range of functions, but they are potential or actual depending on the user of the tool.

surveillance capitalism is no exception. The irreducible play in the overall system human+technology -- which just is due to the fact we are more complicated than the system, by logical necessity, since "we" are both ourselves + the system -- leads to a range, array, display of potential outcomes. And, that variability is what is within our control, somewhat, even if we are forces of chaos and anarchy (google), but also in very constructive ways, potentially, and that is the interesting question imho.

Not "so when's it time to get to mah guns?"

tl;dr why is it always "therefore, guns" with some of you guys?
