So apparently I missed out on DOOM 2016. All this subject has done is make me want to try that game out now. It is a Shame that this one does not live up to that level.

2016 was a real breath of fresh air for the single player shooter genre

I hated the nest mechanic though. I liked how the slayer gave no fucks about exposition, but the obvious "this is an arena and you will be stuck here until you clear waves of respawning mobs" really wore me out. So I put 2016 and Eternal on the same level, with Eternal being much harder due to their use of the hunter mobs and the blatant reliance on quick swapping to cancel the reload animations that I never got on with due to being too fucking lazy to rebind weapon slots 6-9 to something more accessible. But Eternal didn't have the nests, just obvious arenas. The nests were what really annoyed me visually and mechanically. I'm done killing, let me fucking go, I don't want to go over and sit through a fucking animation to pull something out of this object that acts like a fancy door switch.

I just played through Doom 1 and 2 again recently, and they never did the blatant spawn thing. All of their arenas were full of mob closets that you triggered throughout the level during back tracking usually, so it felt somewhat less stale being thrown new enemies in a slightly modified arena each time.
