No, that's really not true. You can come in with a contrary opinion and get shouted the fuck down. But if you support that opinion, and engage in discussion, rather than using a feelsdata crutch the majority will back off.

I did the exact same thing with Zimmerman, except I started even further away than you did. I questioned not only his moral culpability but his legal one as well. I was fairly convinced for an appreciable while that what he was guilty of was manslaughter rather than murder... and through the discussion which followed my opinion did change. Not because of peer pressure, but because of the discussion itself. Because I actually took part in that discussion and was willing to consider opinions other than my own I managed to fuckin' learn something.
