I would buy a Steamlink and play it on that rather than get a PS4 version if you haven't already played it. Looks and runs fantastic. And will run better and look better that way.

Yeah, so I was bored and decided to mess with this freebie that I downloaded on the PS3 years ago. Wow, really impressed with this game. Sure, I see that there is a PS4 version due out soon but I'm not too demanding in my old age, so the PS3 version still looks pretty good to me.

Anyway, what I discovered was that pawns from your friends list are free of RC regardless of level. I'm only level 17 but I picked up a friend's level 37 pawn that was in my rift which made some fights super easy. Is this a thing? Picking up high level friend pawns to make things face-roll easy? Unfortunately my friends list is pretty small so I lucked out that someone actually had played this game.

Yeah can easily make the game boring if you do it though, especially between the hacked pawns and the just really high level ones. Personally I just sticked to the premade pawns not the online ones even though they suck, balanced it out, and when I replayed the game with Dark Arisen I just went solo with the solo trait thing to compensate, made the game more fun, but matter of taste.

Oh god we had a ton of fun playing dragons dogma in the past. We had our pawn be the smallest male could make with a hilarious munchkin voice and we called him squeak. We tended to run around with him over our shoulder and threw him into fights. We got so many messages from people who used squeak who said he was making them cry laughing as he was so freaking odd.

So where are these custom pawns coming from? Is it a player's main pawn? Because I can't create any pawn other than that.

Yes the custom pawns you recruit are other people's main pawn. When they're offline their pawns are added to the database it can pull from. If you're offline you'll get generic Capcom created pawns instead. There's a few online features in the game, even though no multiplayer. For example the Ur Dragon(postgame boss) has massive shared hp online and when you fight him, you only do a bit of damage to it, then when the 10mins or whatever the timer was is up, the damage is sent to the server and recalculated. It's killed by all the people playing and gets stronger everytime it's killed(up to a certain amount).

The pawn system is an interesting way to interact with people even though it is not a directly multiplayer game. If somebodies pawn has been around when a secret was found or a dungeon was done if you hire them they will often point stuff out for you in dungeons/caves and what not. Like I think there is something over here boss or things like that.

So this game quietly came out on the PS4/Xbone yesterday. It's one of my favorite games ever, and highly underrated as far as I'm concerned. The PS4 version isn't going to win any graphics awards, but it's smooth as butter, a decided improvement from the PS3 version, and the lack of aliasing nice. If you haven't played this game it's a no brainer buy.

I saw it came out and was really interested. Heard good things. Im definitely going to pick this up. Does it require any back knowledge?

No, not really. Story is its own thing and class structure is fluid. In a post dark souls world its hard to discuss difficulty, but there is a distinct change in difficulty at night and away from the main roads. What I would say, is until you start getting some good abilities and team setup, stick to the main roads and sleep at night.

It's the only game in the series, it's just packed with the expansion, so there is nothing to catch up on. Adding to j00t's point about night time and sticking to the roads, be sure to save often and make a good pawn because you're stuck with them for the rest of the game.

A little pro tip is that escort quests can be missed, they disappear after a set time or when you progress the main story. IE: I missed one that was on the notice board, I rested at an inn to progress to day before taking the quest, and it disappeared. So pick the quest then rest. You can only have one escort quest at a time, so picking one out of three, then resting, will not impact the time limit on the two that remain. Escort quests can directly impact where NPCs are and what they give you, so actually worth doing. Some of them are hard early on though, so you might need to try to run through some of them and reload if the NPC dies.

Most quests are given through notice boards (and some by just listening to dialog from NPCs, but they are really apparent when NPCs start having an actual conversation), but the notice boards are located at different spots. I usually travel between them after completing a main story quest to check if new escort quests have popped up. You do get an eternal ferrystone when you reach the main city (manage inventory at an inn with the "withdraw option"), so travelling to check is fairly quick.

You can hire pawns (two other than your own), and select higher level but they cost "rift" currency. Pawns belonging to people on your friends list are free no matter how much higher level they are. My level 36 warrior would be free, at level 2 or 3 when you get to that point, but a level 10 would be more rift points than you could afford.

In regards to pawns, you can "train" them through inclinations. This is done fairly easily as not long after you get to the main city, you can go back to the encampment where you get your pawn and an old man will be there by the rift stone. He sells inclination potions for 250 rift points each. IE: If you want your main skill to be "scather" (go after strongest enemy + climb on them) and "utalitarian" (aid people/use a lot of skills) as the second skill. You could by 10 potions of utalitarian and 15 of scather. The use the 10 utalitarian first, then use 15 scather. First 10 would overwrite any other inclination you have putting utalitarian first, then the 15 scather would push utalitarian down to number two.

EDIT: Should note that pawn inclinations change with time, so you might need to retrain them occationally. They learn from you and from being used in other parties. I heavily push mine towards "Aquisitor" (they run to loot even in fights) because I am a loot whore. The only inclination you NEVER want for your pawn or rented ones is "Pioneer". With that they run ahead of you which is something you rarely ever want no matter what class you are. You want them to react to fights, not instigate them.

EDIT2: Worth noting that if you feel your pawn talks too much, you can use the chair at the basement of the pawn guild, and the first question "I try to speak as the situation demands", pick no, and they will talk less. Can repeat that process a few times and it will talk less. Only works for your pawn though.

And as two final tips

1) One of the earliest escort quests from the main city is to "healing springs". Be sure to buy some empty bottles before going there. If you stand in those springs you can "take" and it will create a really good healing potion that affects the entire party. 1 bottle = 1 potion. Carry the bottles yourself, or the pawns might end up filling them up if they encounter water or oil pots.

2) Later you can find port crystals. First one can be found when you get the quest to go below the pawn guild. It is the only one which is missable as that location locks. It is right where you investigate to trigger the last part (you will know it, things happen). Just run up to it and take it. There are 4 I think in total, and can be placed anywhere in the open world you want for instant travel to that location. One can be nice to put next to a healing spring for easy refills.

Oh lord, pawn inclinations... Do some research on them before you get to far in the game. I can't remember what they are, but like droigan said there are certain ones that sound good but are terrible, so when you hire pawns, you can gimp yourself. Inclination is the most important stat.

If you get a tank with the healer inclination, he's not a paladin. He will avoid fights to heal people.

Also, a super cool aspect of pawns is that they can learn the game before you do. so an experienced pawn can tell you if there are chests around, or monsters weaknesses, or where to go for the next step of your active quest as long as they've done it before with another player

Just want to add that with the expansion you get an unlimited portal stone in your storage after you get to the main city. It's really handy but if you want the "true" game experience I would completely ignore it until you go into a new game +. Much of the fun is having to risk going out into the wild, especially at night, and porting around everywhere just sucks that out of the game.

ARISE!

I played this on PS3 back in the day. PS4 when the remaster came out. I just downloaded that remastered version and I'm playing it, again, on the PS5.

Such a great game for those who never tried it. Highly recommended. Way ahead of its time in gameplay mechanics.
