It really feels like he's DM'ing and just improvising to keep up with the players.

My favorite thing about the books is how believable the unbelievable is in his story. Like the idea that Carl picks up every single thing not bolted to the ground just in case he can use it later. Like the mundane pieces of large metal from the first few books becoming more useful as they level up; that isnt even tied to a crazy item. It makes them being pulled out later and combined very satisfying.

Clearly inspired by me playing Skyrim.

Edit: I expect the series to end when Carl finally exits the dungeon and his inventory dumps onto the ground, causing a gravitational singularity.

People that put swearing on their clothes and cars so that toddlers can read and repeat them are trashy imbecile edgelords.

Without knowing the context i would assume you love to suck dicks and swallow huge positive loads.

Yeah, just glurp glurp would’ve been better.

People without kids don’t think about that shit.

Couldn’t find a thread on these in the first 5-6 pages… surprised honestly!

This book (series) seems like it would be right up this forum base’s alley. A friend let me borrow the first book and I read all 440 pages in under 24 hours, literally couldn’t put it down. It’s basically Sword Art Online but not virtual, nor gay anime, mixed with Running Man. It’s got an irreverent and slightly dark tone. Well written, which is a nice surprise for a new first-time writer of the 2020’s.

The systems the author has laid out are continually fascinating, and I kept finding more and more depth as the book went on. Since book 1 only explores 1/9th of the total “world” described in the book, I can only imagine it continues to surprise in later books. I’ve ordered 1-5 in hardcover.

Highly recommend for anyone who enjoys fantasy dungeon crawling themes. I actually read a physical copy so I can’t speak to how good the narration is on an audio format. It was the first physical book I’d read in years, and I enjoyed it so I’m sticking with physical.

There were two of them by Greg Costikyan. They were fun reads back in the day.
Yep I read both. The first is significantly better IMO though. I actually emailed him in like 2005 and asked if he was still writing. He has basically quit though unfortunately. Was writing manuals for companies.

Hard to keep up with the thread since I'm a couple books behind and don't want too many spoilers or anything.

Finished Gate of the Feral Gods on my drive home yesterday from work trip. It was pretty good, and I continue to really enjoy the series. Almost out of Audible credits after being at 12 for the longest time. Between this series and the Pendergast series, down to 2 credits left. After Butcher's Masquerade I should be able to get Eye of the Bedlam Bride and This Inevitable Ruin though.

Gate was good though. It is all so over the top and ridiculous, but then Dinniman does a good job of pulling it back down to earth with a good dosage of seriousness and sentimentality. It isn't heavy handed so still light and easy to get through, but then small things hit you.

In case others don't follow small press news, Grim Oak is releasing a signed version of some other Matt Dinniman work. Kaiju: Battlefield Surgeon goes on sale May 21st at the link below. Dungeon Crawler Carl is my first experience with his work so no idea what it is about, just thought someone might like to know. The only thing I don't know is that most of the time these presses do "Series" or "Author Rights" for books. No idea if Grim Oak plans to do a Dungeon Crawler Carl release and their page doesn't mention anything about rights to that series going to anyone who buys Kaiju... but who knows. It'd be cool if they did a signed limited run though, would definitely jump on that.

He also submitted a short story for Grimoire 2025 along with other authors:
