Couldn’t find a thread on these in the first 5-6 pages… surprised honestly!

This book (series) seems like it would be right up this forum base’s alley. A friend let me borrow the first book and I read all 440 pages in under 24 hours, literally couldn’t put it down. It’s basically Sword Art Online but not virtual, nor gay anime, mixed with Running Man. It’s got an irreverent and slightly dark tone. Well written, which is a nice surprise for a new first-time writer of the 2020’s.

The systems the author has laid out are continually fascinating, and I kept finding more and more depth as the book went on. Since book 1 only explores 1/9th of the total “world” described in the book, I can only imagine it continues to surprise in later books. I’ve ordered 1-5 in hardcover.

Highly recommend for anyone who enjoys fantasy dungeon crawling themes. I actually read a physical copy so I can’t speak to how good the narration is on an audio format. It was the first physical book I’d read in years, and I enjoyed it so I’m sticking with physical.

It gets talked about in the litrpg thread, since a lot of those books tend to be very similar. A system (almost invariably snarky, or in this case perverted), stats and skills, levels, etc.

That being said, DCC is perhaps the best of the best in that genre. I completely agree with you, particularly for the first book. Donut is one of my favorite characters in any book I've ever read. I love this series and look forward to each new book. It gets progressively darker and heavier, but still amazingly good.

I don't really listen to audiobooks ever, but everyone says these are some of the best, if you're into that sort of thing.

Yeah, I haven't read a book in years but a friend was telling me about these and I mentioned it to my wife. She bought me the first two books for Christmas, and I had read both of them within a couple of days. Ordered the third one and was pleased that it was quite a bit thicker than the first two, still finished it over a weekend. I ordered the next three hard covers, but they're all pre-orders. Looks like I'll be receiving a new one every other month for the next few months. And as others said, my friend was specifically telling me to download the audiobooks because they were so good.

Also, after I ordered them the algorithm let me know that the rights to the series had just been purchased by some film studio, so possibly a TV show or movie will be made in the future.

A lot of books have their rights optioned early... then nothing happens. Ever.

There was a book I had 10 years ago that updated its cover to say "soon to be a major motion picture". And it's still "soon to be". Not a single news since.

That said, it would be insane as a series. But I'm not holding my breath...

I've finished through book 5 at this point (used ebook via Kindle 30 day trial for 4 and 5). I think so far 5 is my favorite, the ending especially is wild.

I remain thoroughly impressed by Dinniman's writing and story-telling ability. I think this is my favorite fantasy/fiction series at this point.

It needs to be converted to animated series by some non-woke producer. Live action would suck, would require way too much CGI $ to be feasible. It also would need to stick only to the source material. I can already perfectly imagine this getting picked up by a woke producer, and they immediately decide there aren't enough characters to check all their diversity boxes, so they have an entirely separate side-along story somewhere outside the dungeon with a bunch of made-up characters, or even using existing characters but adding a bunch of shit that isn't in the books.

Honestly the pacing of new information is one of the things I'm most impressed with, there's always something the author is holding back for a big reveal. Woke faggots would immediately thrust all the galactic shit into the forefront in episode 1 just so they could have their boxes checked.

Guys, I started this yesterday with a ton of doubt in my mind and I am already 75% of the way through the first book. It is great. I love that it is a different take on dungeon crawling but still keeps a ton of the feel of actually playing a game blind.

Finished book 3. Waiting for 4-6 to be fully released in hardback to get the rest. Looks like the author originally self published, but got big money money from a publisher to let them take it over. Pussy Posse hooooo!

Friend of mine told me recently "I finally started reading again, here's something I picked, do you..." "Ooooh boy, you're in for a wild ride".

It's even translated in French for those who don't read in english (that's not the case for said friend).

I also haven't seen a dungeon diving team of weirdos like that since Planescape Torment (seriously, if your group then didn't include the skull, the modron and the animated armor...)

It's been said before, but highly recommend getting the audio books on audible. This series is probably the best audio performance out there. Well worth it.

I don't do audio books. Just not my thing. Paper and imagination. I read a lot faster than anyone could ever speak.

Already finished number 2 and went straight into 3. I don't want to spoil myself but I'd really like to know if he has a plan for the number of books in the series and how close he is to finishing. I saw at the end of book 2 that he said book 3 was already finished...that is some crazy writing. I hope he is keeping up the pace.

It has 7 books. Not sure if that is all there will be.

I just ....could not get into it. I may try again. Started a new (to me) Alastair Reynolds series though so it may be a while. His books are hefty.
