Might not be a popular opinion , but I'd honestly not have any issue with them selling beta access from the start. As in still having random signups getting in periodically , but pay X and you get in guaranteed on this date/phase. Possibly even tiers to get in from the very beginning and scaled from there.

I see Greenlight games on Steam doing it and some kickstarters , don't really see a problem with SOE doing it for this.
Dont mind selling access but rather they didnt use it as their main source of testing. Its more like crowdsourcing in some way.

But reason from the quote was the kickstarter idea. Would be funny if the SOElive Reveal is to announce they just started a kickstarter for the game with teirs for levels of betas and stretch goals. Set the goal for $1,000 with stretch goal unlocks for extras to all supporters. Digital posters, ingame items, collector box set items for those who pledged X amounts.

They want a startup cash shop money frenzy and before alpha even hits, that would do it. Limited teirs for dev forums, name in the game as NPC, etc. You get the point.

People that pay money for beta access seem like the kind of people that would be far more willing to fill out bug reports and help with development to me.

SoE has a HUGE opportunity here. Their reputation for shoddy MMOs can be seriously repaired IF, since there really isn't a new big AAA MMO coming soon. They can take their time, polish and tidy up the game and release it in good shape.

Now that Blizzard's rep for great games have been tarnished lately, SoE has a chance to make a comeback.

Or what usually happens is they bitch and moan the most and say things like "we already paid" or "we are already customers" etc.

I totally agree with you, SOE cant fuck this up.
EQNext is there Flagship as well as next gen Tech, as well as the entire market for FTP cash shop/Hybrid Sub has changed rapidly the last 2 years.
Make no mistake SOE wants wow type money.

If they do this right, they will get a couple million playing and spending money in the cash shop, as well as Hybrid sub plan it will have, plus maybe more SOE all access sub money.
The only question is will the sell boxes as well as digtal download packs for the launch game, as well as future expansions.

I personally think they still charge for the boxes, even if they fluff them up with station cash as well as items, mounts, pets etc for more expensive packages.

Look all that being said, don't think they get wow type of numbers for combo of subbed and ftp players spending money on cash shop, game packages etc.

They do this right, they should make more money then all there current games combined.

Cheers.

Wildstar is just around the corner and FFXIV if you want to count that. Blizzard expansion next year maybe. Then there is TESO which will have a huge marketing budget, whenever that comes out. Archeage in the next year, year and a half.

I think this is just going to be Neverwinter, done worse. SOE's development capability is full of fuck.

I agree 100%. Can't see how anyone is giving this piece of shit company the benefit of the doubt - but I'd love to eat my words. Truth be told though, I spent a few weeks goofin' off in Neverwinter before the interest waned. I Imagine I could get 2-3 more weeks out of the same game set in the EQ universe for nostalgia's sake if nothing else.

While my cynical/realistic side still has me doubting , just the way Smed and others have gone full bore "This is the best thing ever" has me at least hoping. I just think they've got to have some shred of intelligence to realize if they are hyping this much they had better at least somewhat deliver.

Of course I also bought the CE of SWTOR thinking Bioware wouldn't fuck up a 200+ million dollar budge Star Wars mmo............

Budget was closer to 300 Million for the delays, marketing give or take.

Don't feel badly I felt the same way, as die hard star wars fan, I thought there was no way my precious Bioware Docs could fuck this up, and we all the beta testers kept listening to them, saying it wont launch till ready without LFG finder, and many other MMO normal features same with server transfer tool, chat bubbles they kept saying they was some secret patch.

Bioware's flop was absurdly predictable from where I'm sitting. I play all their single player stuff. Their high quality single player campaigns do not translate to an MMO environment worth a damn, and these guys had like 1 year of tiny arena style multi-player experience. Coming off of WC2, D2, SC, and WC3, Blizzard had the appropriate skillset for an MMO before they ever wanted to make one. Bioware still doesn't after they've released one. SOE is in the same ballpark. The creation of a thing such as SOEmote is all you should need to realize their priorities are bass-ackward.

Bioware have had no high quality single player stuff since forever. The whole dragon age series was seriously below par. And SOEmote seems to me like some little gimmick they made to keep some of their staff busy while the important people were working on important stuff like Planetside 2 and EQ Next.

Mass Effect is awesome, and Dragon Age both progressed and regressed in 2. Combat was way more fun, but parachuting mobs and zone re-use was lame as fuck. Also they've been half-assing the programmable companions from the word go. FFXII did the same shit, but AMAZING, and Bioware copied it badly. I'd love to haveFFXII's gambit systemin an MMO.

Can I be a forum douche and preface my point to avoid backlash:

I have never participated in trading card games (Pokemon etc)

a Pokemon-like card game embedded in EQN would be awesome. Collect rare cards and battle them maybe simplified MTG style and there's your "gems" ingame subgame.

Bioware would have been far more successful if they made one of their single player games with a living world and pvp and raids tacked on. Instead they added all the bad parts of MMOs to a single player game and ruined that and then because of their engine and focus on stupid shit they had a shit unfinished endgame.

It was a glitch. I'm 1,000% sure they didn't keep anyone who signed up, and beheaded their webmaster.
