Depends on if they actually handle this in a 'first aggro' way or 'first damaged'.
If you don't damage the NPC, does it lock? That is an important distinction - damage vs aggro.

In EQ2, you could run around with unengaged NPCs and walk them up to people whom would engage them via pbaoe.

It really depends how it's handled on the code side, and I'm sure knowing EQ it's going to be hilarious. The fact that you can't damage/land spells on things you're not engaged with means any 'aggro leaking' between people not in the encounter can be used to essentially stick mobs on a group with them having no way to get rid of them. If healing aggro leaks aggro, then you can park a loosely tagged mob next to a cleric in a group and now they have a new friend until they zone. If it doesn't? Park all your clerics in a second raid and they can heal/rez with no worry of pulling aggro.

People can proxy agro and train you now.
If it's first damage they can't break your mezzes and dispel your roots once they drop it on you.
If it's first to agro it will be harder to train you.

If a tagged monster is impossible for anyone to interact with plus it is impossible for it to interact with anyone but the person/group/raid it's locked to than this would sorta work but you just know it's not going to be like that. You're going to be occasionally dealing with damage immune and spell immune monsters hitting your group while someone skips merrily away.

Also makes it easy for oog monks to clear a path through all the trash for you :)

How do you walk an unengaged NPC to somebody without engaging it?

I was looking forward to making some new toons to level up with family like a diablo 3 season. Play for a bit like Vaniki.
