I'm usually captain of the white knight gang over here, and even I'm pretty meh on some of the decisions on this one. Personally taking a wait and see how people feel after the new wears off before I consider jumping in. I suspect that the monetization will cripple the fun potential here. I've said it before, but if this was FTP or even buy to play I could see it... But if it's a box price + sub + some level of pay2win, or even just pay4convenience... Probably too much for me.

Not because of some idealogical purpose really, just a clear indicator that the wrong people are making gameplay choices.

I watched some of the more recent live stream videos and I think I understand why they implemented some things way different than THJ. From the look and feel they (maybe?) expect or better want people to play 6 month or even a year on a sub until they release the next expansion. Which is fair from their point of view as a business. THJ had 3 expansions in around 7 months if I remember correctly and the power creep of some combos was so massive, people soloed Vulak'Aerr the day they released TOV.
I liked what I saw that you can solo the zones but it's not like on THJ were you pulled the whole zone. One of the beta streamer who knows his stuff died on a 18 SK/ROG/BRD in Unrest because he couldn't handled that one more mummy after pulling 5 ghouls. And that is okay, it looks like you won't be immortal at one point and you have to put more effort into your gear (I like the 1+1 mechanic a lot, encourages farming). The "respawn in the zone you died" is amazing among other QOL changes.

I'll definitely give it a try if they do not do something unbelievable stupid until release. Not much on the horizon regarding MMOs in 2026 anyway.

It’s because everyone was expecting a THJ clone, which like several emus out right now, is built more like an arpg. EQL appears to be much slower paced while still offering multi class and the ability to solo raid content but it won’t be as facerollable as THJ.

The server is like 88% THJ and people are mad it's not 100%.

I don't think I ever died on THJ outside of AEing entire zones at max level or the hardest raid bosses. It just wasn't really possible once you got to a point. If you were a paladin hybrid you'd get slay undead and shit and walk around just doing 8x the damage to undead frogs and most of my time was sitting waiting for all the respawns. It felt fun, but looking back at it there's definitely a better pace between pulling everything and killing it in one 15 second interval and killing every mob over 120 seconds like classic EQ. From what I've seen on T1-2 yellow mobs are taking like a minute+ to kill which still seems a bit long to me, but it could be bad comps/bad gear/low AA's. Like I said, stuff like Slay Undead and Assassinate did a LOT of heavy lifting early on for THJ.

It's not - there are relatively few AAs that touch offensive power, certainly nothing like the stuff THJ had. And throughput just doesn't really scale very much with the variance they've added to items, certainly not like the HP scaling that occurs in higher diff instances when NPCs multiclass.

There's a couple things missing right now. Two hander AA's apparently aren't in. Casters stances aren't in. So speed should probably go up.

Honestly I and nearly everyone I know started THJ at Velious+. I don't know anyone who played during Classic era THJ so I don't know what the TRUE difference in power is. A lot of the shit I used was from Kunark and if AA's are still tied to levels even if you get them at level 10+, most AA's don't exist until level 51+ which isn't even possible at the moment.

Exactly the point we're making in this thread. They're making it purposefully slow/worse to milk subscription money. When AAA studios do that, people are up in arms, when DBG does it, it's just a more chill and relaxed experience than THJ brah. It's mobile style, exploitative monetization and people should hope companies that do that have a bad time.

melee damage seems to scale ok, some more AA on the classes missing them will help that more too not sure if that is even part of the plan though. Caster HPS/DPS scaling is basically non existent and a major problem right now, as are resists and cast times being a huge issue. Cleric is basically the only healer that feels good and is far far far better than any other healer here because they get so many fast casts and some really nice oh shit buttons.

I will hold judgment until caster stances come in, if they improve scaling and the cast time issue then I think many more combos become viable. We will see.

The only thing that scales melee damage to any noticeable degree is weapon. Non-gear shit is not scaling, it's just the baseline power level because everyone will have it.

What THJ did right is they added a bunch of stats to gear beyond just the original stats on the item that actually affected melee or spell damage. But if your idea of scaling OK is that sky geared melee take 30 minutes to kill a boss then they've got it nailed I guess.

the sky bosses is imo a separate issue of them overtuning those bosses. They just need to lower the hp a ton. But melee do scale I feel like a geared up melee with the upgrades really does feel way more powerful. I do think they should add some of the cleave focus effects from later xpacs though. And they should make all focus effects scale with the ranking system. That would go a long way to solving the scaling issues.

melee could use a boost in the str atk scaling formula and the dex crit scaling though. And maybe agi do something instead of nothing. I don’t love the thj route of adding stats when the game already has stats and half of them don’t do anything, just repurpose those.

I sometimes think that about Vanguard. But then I remember how brown it was.

You can play on Perky or Ascendant if you want to play an OP toon in a solo world. That's all THJ was. The guys who did that knew how to code, though, and it ran very well. Something that can't be said for a lot of other emus.

I haven't had much time to put into EQL due to busy RL this week. But in the few times I have been on I have gotten to 20 easily while rediscovering vanilla xp spots. Iksar master race. I can easily chain kill reds with minimal or no downtime. Bag space is a real issue. 8 bag slots total. So if they sell mega huge bags like THJ did I will be one of the folks buying them (like I did in THJ).

I am looking forward to being able to hit POSky once they get personal DZs put in. I have BST as primary class, so I will be able to level a lot of good combos without unlocking other primaries. But having a few unlocked would let me do it a little more efficiently. With 16 classes you have to do it at least 6 times to get everything to max level.
