The funny thing, my real politics are probably significantly more conservative than people like you think they are. But am I really going to get super into that in a venue like the guild discord or websites like this one? Not really, I'm a meme war veteran, I learned a long time ago that you should never expect a rational, serious political discussion online. Are there venues where that occurs? Sure, it happens, but it's the exception to the norm.
My core political ethos is far more anti-populist than it is being "far left" or "far right", my policy positions are mostly a mixture of stuff that would be mainstream in Bill Clinton's Democratic party or George W. Bush's Republican party. I loathe populism of any kind because I am largely in favor of elites running the country and think the "common man" is a fucking plague that should be beaten with a club anytime it starts acting up.
My political arguments in Discord are almost entirely built around "if someone interjects a very low effort, low information nonsense I'm going to shit on them", and once an "escalation cascade" begins where they start saying dumber and dumber things, I'm going to say more and more incendiary things. I learned a long time ago, there's no "high road" in discussions of this nature.
The other thing is, essentially never did I randomly "start" a political discussion. They always popped off because our cast of low information guys would post some nonsense. But if they were posting low information Bernie Sanders shit, I'd have gone after them for that too. It's because the vast majority of EQ guilds are right wing, that rarely happens, it's no secret probably 70% of any EQ guild are righties, so just based on statistics the dumb shit is going to be posted from that side. I think far too many people are allowed to feel comfortable in sharing dumb ideas that never get challenged. One solution for that is for them to stop sharing their dumb ideas. The other is for them to be bullied into a 90 minute crybaby video if they can't stop themselves from posting dumb ideas.
In that vein, if people truly adhered to the "no politics" rule in a guild, I'd never discuss them. But I don't believe in typical "no politics" rules, where they are loosely enforced, so random mouth breathers drop turds of stupidity here and there and the "polite" guildies have to roll their eyes and tolerate it so they don't break the "no politics" rule. If you want a no politics rule it should mean you get like 3 strikes, 3rd time you mention politics gkick. Otherwise it is just a rule that disarms the reasonable in favor of the stupid and unreasonable. But BTW, no guild will enforce a rule like that because if your top DPS Monk posts stupid political shit 3 times, you're not going to gkick him, hence the problem.
