Makes sense they do PC last, since they can do direct patch updates more easily on PC, whereas consoles have both the print release issues and also the crap they have to go through with MS or Sony before patching.

Seems like this mostly going to be a stress test or find some super critical bug that somehow slipped past their internal QA.

Todd has said that there are features they are unsure of, both if and how they will work. Including griefing. If you watch the No Clip documentary, the first parts are on how they built the game. Where they had to change the world to react from one player to others. They said they stripped the overarching story, but have some quests. The main feature is living in the world with other players.

Then comes the gameplay part. Which is basically a 10 minute segment of the developers going "we don't know how this will work" "we can't wait to see what people do" "we can fix it as we go". A month for player to "test" and then implement changes isn't exactly a lot.

Not like Bethesda open world games aren't riddled with bugs to begin with, but when you combine that with multiplayer and features they have never tried before that sounds like a really short beta. Agree with Spronk that this is more of a hype test leading up to launch, then fixing as they go.

I'd also be incredibly surprised if they aren't already working on adding some sort of battle royale to the game. That and I highly expect to see microtransactions tied to the "cards" they are talking about.

That said, good thing about the beta, even if it is a hype test or not, it will show the base game a month before launch. We will know if it is good or appealing to us before it comes out or if it is a wait and see how they fix it. I like that. If people pre-order this and are surprised by broken combat or anything like that at launch, it'll be their own fault.

Another big fan mod thats worth watching for. Their words " Welcome to the Pacific Wasteland - revisit old gameplay systems from previous installments of the Fallout franchise such as skills, the dialogue system and much more, explore new locations and delve into the massive ruins of downtown Seattle in the biggest modern Fallout map ever created, and who knows, maybe make a trip into Cascade, the grand capital of the region. " Hope they both make it to the finish line.

The other big one I can think of is Fallout 4:New Vegas. The last big one Fallout3 in the Fallout4 engine mod is kaput.

Is the FO4 engine so much of an improvement over FO3 that I should care about this?

meh probably not as far as I am concerned, but it is a big project. Though the verticality they could achieve in Vegas proper might be interesting, not sure if I was a modder I would want to spend 3 something years of my life trying to achieve it for a game that doesnt really need it.

I'd love to find good material on using the creation tool for making mods/maps. I can't even find a simple "how to make a fucking room" in Fallout tutorial.

I always had an idea for a Western Mass FO4 mod. It basically takes place 20 years after the end of FO4 (Institute Ending). You're still 'Father/Mother', but in the 20 years that have passed, convinced Piper to act as a director (the idea being that she would help act as a controlling element from a moral perspective). Nat, now grown up, basically becomes what Piper was in FO4 to a degree...she thinks Piper is a sellout and the Institute is still evil. Piper ends up getting poisoned by some experiment and has to be placed in a cryopreservation unit. You're told by one of the other project directors that you'll have to journey to The University (Umass) in order to try to secure the needed materials to cure Piper (long story short, The Institute and The University communicated with each other and sort of acted as "one" until about 100+ years ago, at which time The University cutoff communication over huge disagreements with the direction of the advanced Synth program). Nat acts as your companion since she wants to save Piper. The Institute sets up a relay point and teleports you to the outskirts of Springfield, at which point you have to venture to The University to try make communication and convince them to help you. Had some ideas for major points of interest: Springfield Armory, satire of Dr. Seuss (Quadrangle museums), satire of the MGM Casino, Basketball Hall of Fame, Westover Airforce base (now patrolled by robots...during the Cold War the base was home to basically where all spy plane intel from Russia was handled/developed, idea being that this work continued in the never ending anti-Communist world of Fallout), the Nuclear Command Bunker in the mountains near the airbase (decommissioned IRL, but still "active" in FO), satire of one of the other colleges (probably Hampshire College, make it home to rich super hippy/liberal ghouls), and The University itself. The big thought I had with The University was IRL, Umass was involved with creating the first cloned, transgenic cows (they basically spliced human dna with cow DNA and then cloned them). So in the mod, they perfected this and were able to basically create cloned bodies, but modified and genetically enhanced/genetic chimeras, and transfer their minds into them...kinda creating a sort of immortality. But as they continue to tinker with their genome, they aren't as human anymore.

Pretty sure this is another step towards reintroducing paid mods by gating it behind their launcher, the entire thing reeks of stupidity.
