My first (and still one of my favorite) RPGs was Faxanadu. My first FF was 8 though, and I've never played 7. Should I be telling you guys this? Now I feel... unsafe.

I actually liked 8. It had numerous flaws, but the cutscenes and music were top notch for the time. I would not place it above 4 or 5, but it easily holds its own with the other above average entries of the series (for me, 5, 7, 10, and 12 fall here). FF9 was a good throwback, but I could never get past the whole creepy romance between two 12 year olds and it seemed way too unoriginal. Years later, I am not sure how I feel about 7, especially with the downer ending (a recurring issue with every FF other than 8 since FF5) and weird plot, but it is the breakthrough game that put the series on the map for a lot of people, though the gameplay was definitely average and lacking compared to prior entries. Its really where square stopped giving a shit about other aspects of the game in favor of graphics. FF3 suffered from uneven balance and story issues. FF2 and FF13 (with its sequels) are the ones that are outright dogshit, though. I know there are people who jizz over Lightning Returns, but that was not a FF game. It was a timed button mashing fest with a story so out there it made the core FF13 one seem intelligent. I mean, I liked the Vincent spinoff shooter game but I would hardly consider that an RPG and it had more RPG aspects than LR.

X-2 had a decent game system, but the Jpop shit was grounds for nuking Japan again, plus its really just FF5 masquerading as Charlie's Angels Barbie Dress Up adventure. The game was literally made so that people like Sean could have a new line of weeaboo pillows to masturbate with. I mean, my wife would come home and see me playing it and just laughed every time she saw the ridiculous loli crap. I think I would have rather got caught surfing tranny porn than playing that game by her. But X-2 was still more bearable than anything in the 13 series.

They need to go WAY back to their roots. I thought they did for a bit with 12, but looking at the new game its another Thai Ladyboy protagonist with the world in ruins no matter what the heroes do plotline, only this time with 10x more button mashing. Seriously, its like every game since FF5 (outside of 8 and 12) has had the world getting skunked, even if you beat the game. Give us back actually strong lead heroes with real back stories, like Cecil, Rosa, Locke, Vincent, or so on. Let us actually save the fucking world. And for fucks sake, knock it the hell off with the pedo/loli shit.

Only FF's I "finished" was 4, 6, 10, and 11/14.

I tried to finish 7 so many times but it was such a slog.

Oh you're missing out. Ps1 came out 2 days after ff1 in Japan, it's weird how that happened. It features first person dungeon traversing which was pretty innovative in 1987. It's a bit hard to get into, but kicks up a notch once you start moving along.

The real winner is ps4 though, it's an absolute master piece that I'd put on the same level as ff6 or chrono trigger. PS2 is actually my second favorite rpg of all time, but it's a bit dated to recommend.

Phantasy Star 2/4 were great games, and pretty much the best RPG wise (shining force was turn based strategy) on the Genesis that I can remember. Dragon Warrior came out when I was 8, and FF when I was 9. I still remember going through Chaos' castle in FF and spending like several hours in there killing things and leveling, and finally got to Chaos. He got a preemptive attack and cast Nuke, killing everyone but my Warrior, whom he cast Stop on the very next turn, then killed the following. The one and only time I've ever thrown a controller, which is largely because part of the cord was under the leg of the chair I was sitting on. Instead of flying harmlessly away, it spun at mach 3 around the chair leg and smashed into my shin before exploding. Still have the scar!

PS2 had the kind of "wtf!" moment like 1/3 of the way in, where like the secondary main character Nei dies. Mildly traumatic for a 9 year old!

It's hilarious how much better PS1 was than any NES RPG. Poor Sega Master System. I loved that thing, but it had a rough go in North America.

It was pretty damn innovative. It had turn based battles, a levelling system, a strange but lovable cast of characters (a "cat"!), first person dungeon mode, interstellar travel, vehicles, and falling through the floor at the end was a surprise.

That big pyramid dungeon near the end was a bitch. I need to fire that up on emulator. I haven't played it in decades.

I agree. Cross was a good game in and of itself. It's just the worst possible way to build a sequel to the Chrono franchise. It has very little to do with what made Chrono Trigger good. The inference that all the main characters from the first game died unhappily irked me to no end.
Eh, it's less that they died unhappily and more that their timeline ended up getting destroyed. I liked the tragic nature of the Chrono Cross story.

Chrono Cross was only popular because of the word "Chrono". it feels about as much like a sequel to Chrono Trigger as Super Mario Bros. 2 felt like a sequel to Super Mario Bros..

i.e. it felt like they took a game that was already made with different IP and just copied and pasted some Chrono Trigger shit into it.
