Fuck Comcast

I just got off the phone with them and I am so pissed that I need to rage. If this sounds familiar and you found a good way to solve it, I am all ears.

6 months ago my bill for 30meg internet went from $55 to $70. I called and was told that if I add basic cable it would only be $60.

I just got my bill in the mail and now for the internet and basic cable it is $80. I called to bitch / change my plan and was told this.

If I drop basic cable and just go to internet it goesUPto just shy of $90. If I lower my internet from 30meg to 20meg, it lowers the bill a measly $5. Drop it to the next tier at 6-10meg and it becomes $50. FML

All I use my internet now is for the web and watching shows on hulu / downloading shit off of bit torrents. Does anyone know of a way to get some decent internet at a decent price? I live in the Twin Cities(St. Paul) so it isn't like I am out in the sticks somewhere. I live alone and the only heavy lifting I do usually comes from downloading tv shows/movies/music/porn from "The bay" and I usually just leave the computer on overnight and while I am at work.

Any help is appreciated.

you gotta threaten to cancel.. Tell them you want to cancel. The first person can't change your rate where you want it to be. Basically get to their last line of defense. Tell them what you're willing to pay and they will probably bend. Do you have FIOS in your area?

Your options are Comcast or Century Link, that's all there is in Saint Paul.

And yeah, they make bundling cheaper, it nets them more subscribers on paper and more money from advertisers. Century Link does the same, though bills don't go up when you unbundle, they just go down minimally.

Call them and tell them you're cancelling and switching to whatever competitor they have. If they don't give you a good deal then switch. Part of the business model for these types of services is to pull people in and then increase the rates steadily.

Just looked and FIOS is not available to me in Saint Paul.
Cancel your service. Put it in a roommate, friend, relatives name. Bam. New customer discount. When that ends, repeat. If you don't have someone else, just cancel your service for 24 hours, call back in as new customer. If Rep says you just had service, hang up and call until a rep who needs the commission will just set it up for you.

Yeah, comcast just hiked my rate from $30 to $45, and I think it'll go up to $60 or $70. That's for 10mbit downstream.

The problem is that FIOS, though faster, is still more expensive. I'm perfectly happy with 10mbit, but even $60 for that shit is ridiculous.

Wonder if I should call them now and bitch to have them set it back to $30, or whether that's not going to happen? I don't have a roommate.

US broadband speeds and pricing are ridiculous. We need some EU type regulation of internet and cell phone companies badly here.

Can someone please explain, in idiot proof terms, how private company's get control of something that is national like a phone line grid and are able to make tons of profit off it? I just don't understand what service they actually provide. If a private corp can have access to the grid that they didn't lay then why can't private residents? I understand the whole you go to set it up 'n ok I don't understand any of it. Remember i'm looking for a super dumbed down version of this explanation becuz I r retarded...

Going through the same crap with Comcast right now, bill has been floating around $140/month for two hd boxes and mid level internets. Going up to $180 next month. Haven't had any luck in a few phone calls getting it lowered yet, going to throw the direct tv at them soon. Maybe try the cancel and reup if that doesn't work. Bane, can't you just hook all of us up on some kind of friend program?

My dad was digging ditches and laying phone lines for Illinois Bell back in the 60s and 70s... it definitely wasn't the government.

Because they did lay the grid?
Not sure if this is true or not but I think I heard that companies like Comcast, AT&T, etc., did in fact do the ground work to lay all the piping / infrastructure but that they were HEAVILY compensated / given massive grants by the government to do so and thus they should not have a monopoly on it. [citation needed]

Does anyone in the twin cities have Century Link? Is it shitty DSL or have they gotten better?

well the cable companies- for the most part- laid their own cable.

as for comcast- only show in my town so i suffer- but i regularly bring the gear in and say, it is not working right- i get a new modem once a year basically.

now that my kids are getting older i looked at my monthly bandwidth use...since my son got his phone and the twins got ipod touch's..we went from using ~30-50gig a month to 150-190gig a month.

If all you are doing is email / movies on hulu 10 meg should be enough for dvd quality streams.

If you are going to be doing blue ray or HD steams you probably will have to let it buffer a little bit. Be happy with DVD quality, pay more for the internet, or change companies.

Those are your only options imo.

Move to an area with Charter. Fucking amazing the difference between that shit company Comcast and moving to a suburb with Charter.

I called them up a few months ago because Charter was running a 4 DVR plan for $20. While I was on the phone, the chick tells me "You know...we changed our pricing plans, and you're still on our old plans. If you want, I can change it for you and get you a better deal." So I tell her that I'm on the 2 year price guarantee plan, and I don't really wanna fuck with it and see my bills go up every month again. She says "No, that won't be a problem. Our customers have told us they don't like being locked into a rate, so we've just done away with all the contract stuff and just give you that rate." I currently have EVERY channel that Charter offers (this includes all the shit that's not on the normal digital cable plan..like Palladia and the Smithsonian Channel and shit), and ALL the movie channels (HBO, Skinemax, Showtime, TMC, Starz..everything), I have 30 meg internet, and unlimited long distance phone, and HD DVR's upstairs and downstairs, for $2 more a month than I was paying prior to that phone call. And the best part...it wasn't bullshit! I actually do just pay what they told me I was gonna be paying.

Charter 4 lyfe man. Company is awesome.
