For the past three years I have been using a Samsung 40" 4k tv as a pc monitor. Looks fine to me but it won't go above 60hz even though the specs on the monitor say 120hz (I think that is some kind of bullshit fantasy spec the justify by doubling framerate or something, not a real world possibility) and that hasn't been a problem because I've been using an Nvidia 980ti for years.

I just upgraded to a new Nvidia card and would like to get a monitor that wasn't locked to 60 fps max. But I also am pretty used to the 40" size. I doubt I can have both, is there a compromise that doesn't cost a ton of cash?

And if the answer is just to suck it up for another year or two and wait for new developments, that is fine too.

120hz on samsung monitors means 60hz plus that gimmick

Most TV brands always bullshitted about 120/240 with their motion___ whatever technology that anyone with a brain turned off immediately. Ironically, HDMI 2.1 is forcing them to correctly specify 60 or 120 Hz now.

That's a lot of money and the NANO 85 is much more reasonable.

Depends if you want reasonable or the best!

I admit the perfect blacks in Destiny does make shit seemingly too dark some times.

The OLED (and most other "2.1" TV's) has problems with VRR that should be researched before buying. Hdmi 2.1 overall is a clusterfuck atm

The Best Buy near me has the 49" Nano in stock and the Costco near me has the OLED in stock so I'm going to go check both out this morning and get one of them. I watched a video of the OLED sitting right next to the Nano and the OLED wins hands down...but if the Nano looks just fine on its own - which I think it will - I'll be just fine buying the Nano for 1/3 the price. Either of them will be a huge gain over the Samsung panel I'm using now.

I bought the nano. Looked fantastic standing alone and now that I have it home and installed the 120hz change over the old one is night and day. What doesn't work right now is HDR, I get a purple color with it enabled and that looks to be a limitation on the bandwidth of my old cable. I ordered a new 2.1 compliant cable from Amazon and should have it tomorrow.

I have that same hard mousepad, though I don't use it anymore. Bought that shit like two decades ago.

You might want to reconsider that mouse wrist rest. It's probably doing more harm than good.

I might be overthinking this monitor thing. As much as I want an ultrawide (particularly one with hardware g-sync), I'm probably better off just mounting 3x LG 27GL83A-B on a triple monitor bow.

They were $20 or so back when they came out 15-20 years ago. You hardly ever see them new in box now but when you do the auction prices go for hundreds of dollars. People are crazy about these things!

G13 and Orbweaver prices have jumped up to $200+ NIB due to no longer being manufactured and Razer and Logitech both being idiots.

OK this is a silly question and i am sorry i should know this.

1280 x 720 is 720P
1920 x 1080 is 1080p
2560 x 1440 is 1440p
3840 x 2160 is 2160p but we call this 4k. Why do we call it 4k? and not 2k? Did they simply shift from the vertical to horizontal naming?

My monitor is
3440 x 1440 but its called 4k. Is it not 1440? as the vertical is 1440?

I am trying to see if my 60FPS from AC:V is good or if should be pushing more, when i look at FPS charts i don't know if I am 1440p or 4k.

I love my monitor but am i in 1440 or 4k or does it even matter because it looks great to me?

I just think of yours as 1440p not 4k. Now that the computer display is merging with TV/movie resolutions its all fucked up.

In television and consumer media, 3840 × 2160 (4K UHD) is the dominant 4K standard, whereas the movie projection industry uses 4096 × 2160 (DCI 4K).

It's called 4k because it's 4 times the pixels as 1080p. So if you call 1080p 1k, then 4x that would be 4k.

Yeah, it's not exactly accurate, I know.

That makes sense to me. and i am OK with it,

But then i see articles like this which call it 4k.

Alienware have announced their new flagship gaming monitor, which manifests in the form of the AW3420DW monitor. This is a 34" monitor with 4K (3440 x 1440) resolution powered by a fast, 120 Hz refresh rate IPS panel. Alienware have designed their Nano Color technology into this monitor, which means that it can cover 98% of the DCI-P3 and 134.5% of the sRGB color gamuts.
