Ya, I've read a lot about how the Nuclear Winter theory was overestimating the impact on global temperatures. The more impactful elements would be the radioactivity and overall destruction of infrastructure (also factoring in the EMP bursts that would fuck up non-shielded electronics)

EMP would end civilization, but its doubtful rads would end the species unless we tossed some neutron bombs in the mix. Most nukes the rads are done in a year or so. Hirashima was clear four months after getting nuked.

All of that is straight A+ tier disaster porn.

Until you realize that the "experts" predicting it are the same kind who predicted Covid 19 was gonna kill a billion people and that globalhomo warming was gonna kill us all 50 years ago.

So, meh.
Well we have fossile records of mass extinctions and soil samples to tie in. After the fact evaluation is different than fear mongering predictive bullshit.

Hiroshima was just a single uranium bomb with (relatively) low yield that airburst, though, so hard to compare that to modern nuclear weapons. Modern total nuclear war exchange doctrine is pretty much: High-atmo detonation to create EMP, followed up by strikes on in order - Leadership locations, major military sites/ICBM sites, secondary military targets, large cities. You're talking about hundreds of multi-warhead missiles raining down literally all over the country, with each individual warhead containing probably at least 30-40x the power of Hiroshima...but when you factor in they pack like 8 into a single missile, you're looking at hundreds of times more powerful per launched weapon.

The topic comes up every so often. It's going to cause X or Y. Goes in circles. Nuclear winter, no sunlight from the ash, just wall of flame covering 1/2 the earth. Regardless won't be good and I assume not much anything can do, but have a good seat to the instant mayhem.

pretty much, in every case scenario, we would be proper fucked. the other hemispheres will be affected as well. a gaping death hole spewing lava and ash into the sky isnt good for anyone.

Sure the primary detonations are way more powerful. But outside a neutron warheads, which are supposedly against treaty but everyone has them, the radiation produced by nuke strikes isn't that much greater than the original bombs. Even the desert and Pacific island sites where they set off tons of bombs Have been clean for years.

youll have to specify you want to be paid in cave plants and make sure the company is located in a nearby cave so you dont have to go outside in the lava/ash rain.

The only one of those that seemed to do any justice to what a big quake feels like was the Alaska one. The 8.3 Chile one in the airport people looking fucking bored.

I can't even imagine an 8+ earthquake. For some reason those all didn't seem to last very long, either.
