One thing I hope they added (which I doubt) is something akin to the stake of Marika. Nobody liked "boss runs" in the DS games. Dying while exploring and having to go back is fine, but running half a map through traps and enemies to try boss fights isn't fun. Especially not dying as you try to rush losing everything on the way as the "souls" are at the boss fights. Tried Hollow Knight again recently and it just.... felt like it didn't respect my time? I doubt a new souls type game from FromSoft will ever release without something akin to the stakes of Marika, as I think that was a universally approved of mechanic even from the most die hard "no summons, no nothing, no help!" crowd. So hope this game has evolved to take note of that. Hell, I'd even take a mechanic where you could (out of combat) "use" some health to leave a respawn. So you get to respawn outside boss room, but downside is you have 2 less health doing the fight or somesuch.
Oh yeah I remember that now, wonder if it'll be the same. I usually don't mind running back too much but sometimes the save point is so fucking far it's such a waste of time and it breaks the rythm when you're getting into the patterns of a boss and finally making progress but then you have to spend 3mins doing stupid platform shit to get back there to try again. The point is losing souls, but honestly that's a very avoidable thing anyway(just recall back and spend your souls before doing a boss) so it shouldn't be a justification for the system.

Wouldn't mind if they just let you restart outside/put a rest area in front of each boss room.

Everyone must be trying to download this, it should be out but is buried in gamepass menus. Had to search like 3 times for it to come up.
And isn't showing up for free on Xbox, but free on PC for Gamepass.

But I'll give them a break they are a small indy company!

The original was great and I love me some metroidvanias, but my backlog is big enough I'm still going to wait on reviews.

It kind of felt like in 2017 the resurgence or explosion of the Metroidvania stuff was just getting kicked off. So Hollow Knight came out at a real good time. Ori came out just before that in 2015 and from my mind really got things kicking. Dead Cells was 2017 also.

So, it was well positioned as a very polished game to come out and catch a wave and was just really competently done and delivered.

In 2025 it feels dated maybe? But that's why I have high hopes for this one.

Haven't found anything bad about this game after a few hours playing. Mostly more Hallownight, with a slight visual improvement and a protagonist that can talk. Music is great so far.

Funny enough on the tech side, despite only needing at best 10 year old hardware, it fully supports ultrawide and 144+ hz monitors. Elden Ring Nightreign did neither unmodded.

Steam crashed earlier, I'd hope it wasn't from a new game with a 2 gig download.

I haven't played this yet, but have watched some streamers go at it. A couple things I've noticed: A) the downward attack is retarded and cancels the attack right before you land, so sometimes you run right into enemies instead of damaging them; B) there's some bounce-attack type platforming that looks absolutely frustrating.

I can confirm on the first. Just beat the bell beast and ran into getting damaged on my down attack quite a few times. Was frustrating me b/c it didn't seem to have the attack frames or something b/c I'd get clipped by the edge of the enemy or something and get hit before hitting the ground / missing the attack.

After an hour or so the most I can say is that it feels like more of the same. Not a bad thing, but so far nothing earth shatteringly different. There are differences but it is still Hollow Knight.

You get used to learning when to hit attack and mapping out where it’s going to land. It’s just like Hollow Knight where you can’t just spam the attack button and have to time it out. There’s boss down the line that was slaughtering me until I learned you can just bounce off him like Mario over and over.

I think I’ve gotten worse at these types of games. Maybe I’ve missed an upgrade or two since I’m not clearing out vendors or farming, just following the maps and exploring the side chambers for rosaries and mask fragments.

Moorwing is my first “git gud” boss. And unless I’ve missed it, the closest rest is many screens and trash mobs away 😩

I had bought it on steam, but watching streams it's obvious they didn't just ignore boss run complaints, but extended them. Many of the bosses are like Dandai said, several screens away with puzzle jumping and trash mobs that take 2 health away even by touching you. I'm sure it's an overall good game, but I refunded it. Will play it on Gamepass if anything.

I get PTSD just looking at the trailer.
I was stuck in so MANY places during the first game. HOURS and HOURS in what were essentially "time loops" trying to get through certain parts over and over and over again. Sometimes checking the internet and seeing what I had to do (or might be doing wrong), but it required movements and actions be done so precisely and quickly that I could not do it.

This is not going to be a game for gaming retards or anyone who has anything short of "lightning fast reflexes" or is anything short amazingly adept with ALL the functions of their controller.

The first was a great game, but I am nowhere near a great gamer. I don't think I can live through that trauma again. Give me a pinball machine.

Same with me. Took me quite a few tries. There is a switch that opens a door that lets you skip all the scissor mobs if you missed it, you can go straight through instead of up and around if that makes sense. I had the cloak upgrade and dash by this point so it was a 30 second run back for me.

Savage Beastfly on the other hand can go fuck itself. Took me easily over 50 tries to finally beat it and the run back is annoying.

I have little patience for games like this that don't respect your time with long walks back to boss doors.

don't respect your time
This describes like..every game on the NES. Kinda worse now, bsck then at least you could focus on a single game. Now i've got like..400 games in my backlog that I'll get to "one of these days".

I remember liking the first Hollow Knight because the world was interesting, the story was engaging even though it was told in a minimalist style, the graphics had a simple but charming style to them, and the animations were super fluid.

From watching trailers this looks to be more of the same, which is a good thing.

However, I remember I didn't 100% the first one because the difficulty was just nightmarish for some of the crazy timing and platforming stuff, so I wonder if this is in the same ballpark in that regard or if they made it a little more accessible (or if the abilities of Hornet compared to the Knight's make it easier to navigate somehow).

put in about 15 hours so far, i wish i could refund on Playstation.
LOVED hollow knight, it was difficult but doable and balanced. There was pogo jumping but it was not ridiculous. I feel that Silksong put in so much BS just to make it harder for no reason.
to pogo full areas is stupid, you'll find yourself getting frustrated just to perfect pogo to get to a "boss" oh, sorry, a "gauntlet room" which are now harder than bosses. A slew of trash mobs in a small enclosed space to test your jumping/dodging skills while your needle can't reach enemies when you think it should.
when you get a new health upgrade it's pointless because at that point the enemies start doing 2 "mask of damage" thus actually giving you less health.
Some trash mobs have more health than bosses, some trash mobs take 10 t0 15 hits!! wtf, why?!
They made the game harder and unbalanced. Hollow Knight was so good, perfect mix of skill and exploration.
oh and don't get me started on the map! 7 years of development and you can't even really zoom in or have details on it. You sometimes can't even tell where your guy is, just "in a room".

Sad really, as I was really looking forward to this game.

The fact that there is almost zero map enhancement is really kind of laughable. Yeah maybe we’re all spoiled gamers being handheld and spoon fed blah blah. But I mean even the original Metroid had a serviceable map. And your “metroidvania” map is so bad not even Lewis and Clark could make use of it.
