It's not hard, but kinda slow going. You could buy a Honda tiller for the low end of that quote, but then you wouldn't use it often and it still wouldn't cover reseeding.
Yeah...I don't want to buy one simply because I'd probably never use it again.

I bet you can rent one for $50 and get it done in a day no problem.
Looked at some vids. These tillers look like they are made for gardening. I need to go this deep to plant some grass? Also am I too late to be planting grass seed?

Fuckit. Have a guy coming in the morning to do the work. Let a pro get me started and I maintain. The guy came and tested the soil said its really great soil. Just compacted. Few patches of moss. He recommended the tiller to remove the rocks and grass etc...
Hate to lazy out, I just want the yard good for the summer for moms, since she isn't able to go anywhere. Me fucking up the grass would pretty much make all my work null and void with it looking like a damn dog pit as far as grass goes.
I consider myself and amateur expert on grass and lawns. Any place that is densely shaded will come in (I'm sure that mix you got has quite a bit of rye grass in it), but it will lay over and die within a few weeks. These landscape guys. Fuck em. I did it myself. Two guys no call no shows now. Bought a 12" tiller. Picked up most rocks and clumps of grass. Cut whatever roots were sticking out the ground. Snagged grub/insect killer. Put down the fertilizer. Raked that lightly into the ground. Added some dense shade seed. Bought me a good hose and sprinkler head. Now to pray to the grass gods!
I'm done for now. Will pick up some bushes/flowers mid May. Have 40 bags of mulch in the driveway, along with some white stone. Just want to SEE the grass 1st.

Keep the seed moist, but not soaked. If the ground looks dry (like the lower half of the picture) then it's too dry for the seed, but if you're getting puddles, it's too wet.
It'll germinate if you keep it moist and it gets SOME sunlight, but all turf grass requires at least 3-4 hours of full sun per day to thrive. If you've got areas of deep shade, the grass will come up, grow to the height that you'd want to mow it, then lay over and never stand back up again after that first mow.Ok. So no puddles. Moist ground. So there is no hope of the grass coming in my shaded yard?
Tree roots just means that area will probably need more water - especially in times of drought. You'll just have to play it by ear to see how much more.It gets about 5 hours of sunlight. I THINK. How about tree roots? Will grass grow around tree roots?
