You need to have a really high fiber diet to help with diverticulitis.
Unfortunately it seems to be one of those things where there are all sorts of conflicting opinion and contradicting studies. Some say no nuts/seeds/corn, while others say it doesn't make a difference. Most say high fiber, but recent studies have shown it makes no difference in preventing flare-ups, and even vegetarians get the disease, and they typically eat tons of fiber. In my case, soluble fiber like Citrucel helps, but insoluble fiber like you get from say Raisin Bran actually makes things worse for me. It's fucking frustrating because I can find no set pattern of food that either detracts or contributes to flare-ups, and you live in a state of paranoia because every time your stomach starts acting up you start worrying whether in a few hours you'll be cramped over in pain and running to CVS for another script of Cipro.

In my case, I have no doubt it was ironically caused by quitting smoking. When I did I developed really bad constipation (cig+coffee in the morning kept things moving) which I ineffectively and haphazardly self-treated with occasional OTC laxatives, but I didn't really care much because it caused no pain. I had no idea that untreated constipation could lead to diverticulitis.. So if any of you out there are reading this, be sure to stay regular or you'll pay for it later.

Our medical nutritionist who stays really current with research works at UCSF and Kaiser and she says that a high fiber diet will help those with diverticulitis, but it can in fact, still cause flare ups from time-to-time. Just telling you what the Big Lady says, Mr.

Will help with divertculoSIS. Fiber won't help you during a bout of diverticuliTIS. The no nuts/popcorn thing is old advice and we now know it makes no difference but fiber should for the most part minimize development of new diverticuli.

Yeah.. Getting old sucks. One's life being forced into the need for constant appraisal of turd quality sucks even more.

Niss: Do you have diverticulosis?

Amazing the things you take for granted (shitting, breathing) when you can do them without pain, until you can't.

Also, my ex-wife used to go and get a hose shoved up her ass at a clinic in Ann Arbor every month or so. She swore it helped her deal with her chronic constipation.

I dunno, I believed her at the time but the idea just creeped me out.

Olebass: I am shocked they gave you Tylenol with Hydrocodone because there is acetaminophen in the Hydrocodone. You could also probably sue them for potentially fucking your liver as it exceeds the Tylenol/day limit.

edit: Also, they prioritize in the ER and while you didn't have cardiac problems, you had airway problems so you should have been seen immediately. I hate Jewlawyers, but, I would recommend you speaking to the hospital manager about malpractice.
Back then the acceptable amount of Tylenol was like 4000 mg a day or something. It may still be but now they suggest less if possible. It was also back in 2005 so it would be hard to go back and bring up a case 8.5 years after the issue and healing and well before they redid how they handle ER here. Back then they just didn't care , wasn't even many people there. Now they have a house sized LED out front stating the wait time in ER average for the day and it is usually under 30 minutes. Pretty sure their is a reason they added that a few years ago after other stories locally about it.

My issue these days is I need to get back on some type of Opiates I think, my back kills me day and night and I take 3 things for it currently non narcotic which all do nothing. Currently I take Chlorzoxazone, methocarbamol and etodolac.
My doctor just keeps throwing stuff at me that doesn't work, which hampers my working as I am self employed as a contractor doing remodeling.

So I tried THC tabs as was discussed earlier and they did really nothing for me. Pretty disappointing as I really thought they might be a new direction to go. I felt a little odd, but certainly not any substantial relief from he pain. Unfortunately you guys were right again.

Was doing the Robaxin-ibuprofen for a while to try and ween off of the opiates but that was a huge failure as well as the pain would not recede to liveable levels.

So this week I am trying a new one. It is called Oxyneo. I take it twice a day (12 hour cycle) and and pretty happy so far. Still have regular Oxycodone for breakthrough pain, but the constant levels provided by he neo are really helping me just not think about it so much and get on with living my life a little bit more.

This is the first med in a YEAR that I have taken and am actually feeling hopeful about. I think it is a fairly new variation? as the pharmacist was a little thrown when I gave him Px and had to do some digging. Also might have issues getting coverage for it through insurance as there were hiccups there as well for me. But, what a fukn difference it is making.

No idea if it is right for you or anyone else of course, but I am happy(er).

I had meningitis once. Junior year in college... I just laid in bed all day until my girlfriend came and took me to the hospital. Doctor said if I came any later I could've died possibly. He then proceeded to do a spinal tap and missed my spine about 5 times and said "wow you have a lot of muscle in your back." Fucking faggot.
Sorry to quote something from 3 months ago...Rarely go to this section.

I got this beat man.

Fuck missing my spine 5 times (too much muscle RAWR!) ...they missed no less than 30. I fainted twice I'm told. They had to call in a surgeon from another hospital who did it on the very 1st try. If EVER there was a time for a man crush...that was it. I got the doctor some cuff links as soon as I got out the hospital.

Meningitis. Ever seen scanners? Your head honestly feels like it wants to explode. Horrific pain.

I've been shot, stabbed, broke bones, had someone try and slice my head off. NOTHING came close to that spinal tap though. Even the meningitis. Worst pain ever.

My current situation of pain causing the last 6 weeks to be miserable:

-Around 6 weeks ago, I have a bad combination of a hard, dry stool from the boozing as well as not enough fiber the previous day. This causes an anal tear as well as hemorrhoids to develop (I get a bad case of them about once a year so I figure no biggie)

-a few days later, I have another BM, and it's pretty painful. However the real pain started to set in a few hours after, building up to a throbbing pain in my asshole so severe that I get the chills and feel generally unwell. I consider myself a pretty tough guy who tries to tough it out before going to the doctor.

-the next morning I go to my doctor to make sure I don't have sepsis or some shit (I felt like I had the flu, so I was worried it was an infection). I have a BM before the doctors office. It is one of the most painful experiences I've ever had. It literally felt like a knife was being jabbed into my asshole. I had to bite down on a towel when I pushed, and got light headed to the point where I felt like I was going to pass out.

-the doctor does a (painful) exam and determines that I have an external hemorrhoids that has formed under an anal fissure. I get antibiotics and a prescription for a foam solution that, when injected into my ass via a plastic syringe, both numbs and reduces inflammation of the hemorrhoids. I also immediately start taking stool softeners and solvable fiber.

-Hemorrhoids go away after a week (it went from pain to just some irritation). Stools become extremely easy to pass due to the stool softeners.

-a new problem arises, think...Daniel Day Lewis every time I'm about to take a shit. There Will Be Blood. Lots of blood. The hemorrhoids are long gone but the anal tear is not healing, and each bowel movement causes it to reopen. The amount of blood in the toilet after a BM is staggering. It looks like the toilet is full of Hawaiian Punch. However since I can basically feel the blood dripping out of my ass, I realize that it's just an anal tear and not something serious.

-Fast forward 3 more weeks, same shit is still happening. Lots of blood, some pain from the tear but not a lot due to my poop being like soft serve ice cream. Getting annoyed and frankly tired of being scared to go the the bathroom.

-Go back to the doctor, get another finger in my ass and a recommendation for a GI specialist, along with some Nitroglycerin ointment. This is the same stuff that people put under their tongues when they are having a heart attack. It opens the blood vessels in your body to help the wound heal faster (turns out, if your asshole is too tight, a tear in the skin cannot heal). It also gives a bitchin headache due to the blood rush.

-appointment with the GI doc is next week. Will probably get a colonoscopy.

Anal problems. Bad times dudes.

My asshole, after I realize I have the urge to poop:

That sounds absolutely terrible. I have always been paranoid about blood in my stool. It's all I can do to keep from rushing off to the emergency room every time I eat beets or pomegranates.
