Nothing really new. People are coming around to the idea that S8 was used as a pilot by GRRM to test Winds of Winter ending.
It was done so poorly and the backlash so great that he shelved it. Insiders now report Winds of Winter was essentially finished prior to S8 airing.
This jives with the twitter gutpunch incident where GRRM started rewriting entire huge sections of the the book (per his own admission) to conform with criticism he was receiving in real-time.

I would argue that if you're focus group testing the plot of your story then you're not really writing anymore. At least not in an artistic way. You can't make art if you're that worried about what people think. Might as well hire a writer's room with one person of every race and LBGTQ+ identity like it's a shitty network TV show at that point.

Master fucking writer doesn't realize that the reason people revolted against S8 wasn't the places people ended up, it was the shitty ass story/ non-reasons that go them to those endpoints. Bran influencing politics through Wierwood visions and green magic sounds terrifying for its in-world consequences; crippled gimp Bran in S8 ending up there and having it be a setup for a shitty ass class joke is lame as fuck.

We know from GRRM's statements on Twitter that is exactly how he writes these days. He self-admitted he was undergoing rewrites due to backlash over the way women were portrayed in the other books. He got attacked by an online mob, leading to the infamous "gutpunch" incident where he nearly threw the entire Winds of Winter away.
He cares a great deal about what people think, including anonymous trolls on X.

I am still 100% certain it was shown out of order, the destruction of the iron throne/city was the mid point and the fight against the undead was to be the end where the bad guys win and everyone died. It was overturned as too bleak etc. and hastily rewritten and shot.

If GOT had basically killed just about every single character and ended with the Night King winning the war and sitting on the Iron Throne as snowflakes fall on him through the holes in the roof it would have been the greatest ending in TV history.

"Subverting expectations" is just a silly phrase for shitty writing.
Instead of "return of the king" which this was clearly stealing its major theme from, we got admiral holdo warp speeding into the night king and handing the crown to the retarded black stormtrooper who did nothing the whole time.

No. As written, there is no viable way to defeat the Night King's army. His army cannot be stopped as he just raises them (See: Boldholme). Bad writing was the shit we got with Arya doing the ninja flip stab of the Night King.

Actually there is a solution to how the Night King's Army could have been defeated. I had mentioned this idea way back when Season 8 was getting destroyed on the internet. I honestly thought this was the direction they were going to take the season.
John Snow was revived by Melisandra in the name of "The Lord of Light". As shown through many examples, the Lord of Light is an entity/god that uses the element of fire. It would stand to reason that The rebirth of Jon Snow could have meant that the power of the "Lord of Light" now resided within him. It would have explained why John Snow was able to survive the freezing temperatures during the Zombie scenes as having that power would have kept him warm.
John Snow should have been the one that confronted the Night King and also destroyed the Night King using that very power. You could have done this with simplistic or fantastic special effects showing the dual between Fire and Ice. This would have also killed John Snow, as the power that revived and kept John Snow alive would have been sacrificed to destroy the Night King.
As to who actually gets the throne.....

Thats where GRRM got addicted to sniffing his own farts about "subverting expectations". Obviously the whole series was leading to an epic showdown between Jon Snow and the Night King, so GRRM had to do something different and subversive.
It really would have fixed a lot to just go ahead and do the expected thing here.
