In classic eq items like silver plated legs I can remember regularly getting $100 for on eBay. Fbss was $300 for the longest time and once got $600 for a glowing black stone. All common guk items would fetch $30-60 each. I never added up all sales but it had to be over 30k from original through kunark era, and this was just doing it casually while still going to school. They banned eBay sales at some point then it was just a matter of consolidating the items for plat and selling plat through the major companies. Can’t even remember their name now.

Cloak of Flames sold for 1200 for a long time on eBay. I sold about 20 of them plus a ton of other items thanks to the corpse dupe.

I remember buying an account just for the CoF and made my money back just on that one item and the rest was gravy. Sadly didn’t know or was friends with anyone that knew these bugs. Sounds awesome if you were low key about it haha! It was so lucrative if you knew where to go. Those early days nobody knew where stuff dropped and you could rake it in. Full sets of bronze were like $100 even 6 months or more in!

in the early 2000s i used to sell platinum from farming plane of water mini bosses for spell runes. early high school i probably made just over 1000. i regrettably sold my first scarab lord account from vanilla (blackhand) for i think 800 to take a girlfriend on vacation. project 99 was by far my most lucrative venue...around 2013 after velious came out i made close to 5000 before i got busted by some snitch who told braknar my method which went undetected for a very long time. i never sold platinum just took requests for high end items/wish lists, mostly fungi tunics which were good for a cool 2 hundy. the snitch was busted after buying from someone else too so fuck him. *edit - forgot i logged into my old p99 accounts last fall and still had some decent stuff, made 450-500 more. havent logged on since but i have a 60 enchanter i could still farm stuff with. ive made detailed posts about the process before but in short some of my earlier everquest platinum was farmed through clever exploits in powater, also applicable in other zones for various things.

I do not have any crazy stories.

I did make some money off Asheron's Call. Sold sets of the special quest armor after they made changes to it. I got 750.00 each for the 3 sets I had. Then I sold my characters for another 500.00. I sold a few EQ accounts for 400-750. I also made a few hundred on Ultima Online waaaay back in the day.

My Hex Shards of Fate account was the last money I made. I had the free draft every week on it. I got $900.00 for the account and only looked back after a few years to see that the game indeed had failed at the end. It was kind of a shame as I liked the idea. Its just that they had poor programmers.

I have to wonder what kind of market will exist if Ashes of Creation ends up becoming a big game.

I just randomly found this post after I was searching for some old Mortalis information. I actually barely spend any RL cash for direct LoN Card puchases at all, I bought that LoN gear in EverQuest itself via the in-game currency platinum. I was into it to stay #1 Bard after there was a vacancy following Thott's departure, but already somewhat lost interest after the original Mortalis disbanded / merged into Tide. I never really felt that much at home in Tide and whatever that other nice american guild I servermoved to later was called, It's a huge difference if you help build a community yourself and see it grow or just join along the way.

Back to Tolpan, here is the story:
What I did was create characters on all servers, run to the next Luclin portal and up to the marketplace to compare prices. At that time they had introduced relatively cheap server transfers of single or multiple characters at once. Already starting with a good fortune of platinum, I bought wares on my origin server and moved them to a server where I wanted to go on a real shopping spree. There I unloaded them fast for a already nice profit, bought tons of wares on that 1st server I moved to, knowing they wound be worth 4x or more on the next server, even if threw them on the market really fast and cheap. After servermoving the marketplace character again to the 2nd server, I managed to multiply my platinum - just to return to my origin server again with lots of cheap stuff that I wanted myself or could resell for another profit. Such a 3-Server ringtrade took about 2-3 Weeks, and I repeated it several times. But people on the other servers started complaining.

My Tolpan- and one of my twink-accounts were temporarily banned due to "disruption of server economies". After me getting in contact with SoE they were unbanned after a few weeks with all gear including purchased stuff fully intact, however more platinum than most people could ever dream of permanently deleted. That's why I quit and went to play some other games, mostly Aion where I had lots of fun and met some really nice and competent people that I still know in RL to this day :)

I still own that Tolpan Account, but only ever logged on 2 or 3 times after that like a decade ago.

It doesn't involve real money, but I did a similar thing when I went back to the game in 2004. Had about 8000 plat in the bank from 2001, wanted to start a monk. Could have blown the plat on a couple decent weapons and been done with it, but instead I did some bazaar-observing and figured out what things were generally going for, then looked for outliers / deals. Any time I could buy something for half or so of what it was worth, I'd turn around and flip it. I did this with FBSS type stuff, then later White Dragon Helms and AOW pants. The economy was so fast-paced back then that I'd be doing multiple major flips per day. After a few afternoons of doing this casual bazaar minigame, I had gone from 8k to around 70k. At THAT point I went on a monk-twinking spree and got him outfitted with all kinds of stuff, some of which were things I'd been flipping. So at level 1 he was using like, a Copper Hammer and Abysmal wraps or something like that, probably remembering wrong, I definitely had a T-Staff though. I kept doing the bazaar flipping metagame sometimes, focusing on Fungi Tunics in particular, and after a few months I had a million plat. Which seemed enormous in late 2004, especially considering almost all of it I'd materialized out of thin air by flipping items on the market.

I've made like 80-100k over the years from RMT, mostly all from EQ and some from DAoC/Diablo2 n 3. I used to farm those dwarves in butcherblock that drop 2h axes, for a while they sold for like 45p each and I could farm like 1k a day after school quite easily and 1k back in the day sold for about 50-60$ on ebay. I would also make decent plat buying and selling items.

It wasn't until a bit after PoP launched that I really started making a ton of $$. I was one of the first people in EQ to know about the Earthshaker warrior exploit where you could kill entire zones instantly and I started to do PL'n with this and would charge 3$ per person per pull and I could do a pull every 40 minutes and I always had a full group. Between that, buying and selling high end items and being part of a late night farm crew on SZ evil team which dominated the entire server, I'd get stuff like tormax heads and other pricey stuff, I was making like 200$ a day on average.

Then on P99 I made a shitload of $$ just sitting in EC tunnel buying and selling mid/high end items but I'd end up getting banned pretty quickly but not before making like 10k. Then I came back a couple years after being banned and made a bard, got to 46 and would exploit the low hp mechanic and would pull all of DL(rogean had to nerf this mechanic because of me). The person buying PL'n from me would get low hp and just kite it and they'd pay me 3k per pull. Then once I did enough pulls to hit like 51 I'd have a necro sac me down to 45 which worked out to me making 6k per pull and 1k was about 4$ at the time and I could do a pull every 45 minutes about. Made like 12k in 3 months doing this and buying/selling items in tunnel before getting banned.

I'm not sure, but my guess is 8-10k

I used to solo farm Fungi Tunics (which wasn't particularly easy as a Rogue) and sell all of them to one particular buyer. He was probably a re-seller, but I was happy with the $400 I got for each one.

Over the years, made a bit but if you consider the hours spent and wasted on MMORPG's instead of more productive adventures it probably cost me more than I would want to know.

Everquest I sold my PoTime geared Pally for $2000-3000 I can't remember exactly but that was about it.
Diablo 2 - I probably made $1000 or 2 selling shit on ebay back when that was a thing.
Diablo 3 - I made about $30,000 selling actual dogshit crafted items for $20-$50 consistently for the first few months through the RMAH shit. I never found any good items that went for $250 since getting legendaries and sets were almost impossible at the start because the game was turbo aids, but I would craft 6 stat gloves and bracers and would list them daily and make bank.

It's probably a shame I never really exploited or hacked any of these games over the years since there is no repercussion for straight up fraud in video games worst thing you will ever have happen is an account ban.

Haven’t made any money in EQ, but I have spent a few shmeckles on it.

On Mischief, I sold probably 50-75% of all the server monk epic MQ’s netting around 350 krono, and gave away an equal amount of monk epics for free netting me flat or even a loss. Had a blast doing both.

There are a lot of ways to make money, and for me EQ is below opening up my own lemonade stand.

Edit TLDR: removed some juicy stuff about GiG and us rooting for Faceless while splintering GiG from the inside out. Fun times but not worth the spread.

Probably about $15,000 from EverQuest and few thousand from Ultima Online. Majority of all this was over 20 years ago. Few thousand of it was few years ago selling 6 tlp accounts.

The bulk of it came from early days flipping CoFs selling for $1,000+, lvl 60s when 60 was cap, lvl 50s when 50 was cap, for like $1,000 each. Sold a lvl 50 Necro for $2,000 once. Ridiculous stuff honestly. I was like 15-16yo

My parents thought the FBI was going to come knocking everytime a $1,000+ check came in the mail to a 15 yo

I was up to about 800 Kronos from Mischief and did a 180 krono bid on some shit item just to get the record for highest bid, had fun jacking up the krono price by manipulating the market for a few days, then quit and sold off the rest on EC Tunnel by undercutting everytime else. So I guess around $4k from that and offloading accounts.

ECTunnel got weird because one of the top krono sellers (Diamond Krono) tried to give me a bulk price to sell to them but they wanted me to trade the krono first. It was very bizarre because he was really pressuring me hard, like a scammer. I then saw that he either had a second account or a partner that they were buying and trading krono from and giving reviews for every purchase. There was some other stuff from my digging around and it all seemed very sketchy and I told him to bugger off. I had to tell him no about three different times before he finally stopped sending messages. Something very weird about the whole thing.

Use to work in the industry in the late 90's, early 2000's. Didn't work on any mmo's though, so nada there.

Usually figure out how to make gold early on any game I play. But never sold it for real life cash. Just use it to make life easier in the game, or give it to my friends who never seem to figure out how to make gold in game.

Closest to making money I guess is selling ton of gold back to GW2 over the years for gems, and that saved me a bunch of cash buying their outfits, Qol items, and such. But I also never buy gold, unless it's from the game itself.

Just not interested in playing the real life cash game with my entertainment. I don't even gamble much (vegas, indan casinos, etc). Basically it just isnt' worth the time / effort for me. I play these games to escape from a job that pays me way, way fucking more than any game could ever get close to.

This is how I’ve always felt too.

Like once I start making money playing a game I would change my whole mindset as far as the hours I spend on it.

On the other side of this thread, best $75 I ever spent was Christmas break in high school I paid some Chinese farmer to grind my WoW char from 56-60 while I played other games and shit.

Couldn't really tell you how much i made in EQ because most of it was a long time ago, don't really RMT in EQ anymore. I did sell my S2-3 Gladitor Druid back in TBC. When i was quitting WOW the owner of a LAN i used to play at offered me free lifetime playtime for it, wanted to buy it for his kids birthday.

Wish I had been able to read it :(

Wouldn't have really been true. He was a whale that didn't really play/raid with the guild at all, he spent 177 KR on the first SoD. The only person that really knew him stayed with the guild until Yelinak launched.

I was up to about 800 Kronos from Mischief and did a 180 krono bid on some shit item just to get the record for highest bid,

I remember that 6am Sol Ro Tower raid. 180kr Greatblade split with like 16 people on the split. RIP Blatty, -10kr for just wanting to cast Denon's desperate dirge.
