'Illegally' clearing his property cost him $100k in fines. But when the Black Saturday fires killed 173, his family and home survived while his neighbours died - so LIAM SHEAHAN asks, why can't we control our own homes?
Liam Sheahan cleared trees and shrubs within 100 metres of his home in the hills at Strath Creek, central Victoria, in 2002 to create a firebreak in case bushfires ever hit. While Mr Sheahan thought that was a 'common sense' decision, the local council did not, taking him to court where fines and legal costs left him $100,000 out of pocket. However his decision to clear the land was vindicated on February 9, 2009, when his property was still standing after Black Saturday bushfires devastated the tiny town.

Mr Sheahan recounted his experience as debate rages in both New South Wales and Queensland about whether adequate hazard reduction and backburning has been performed in national parks, following 'catastrophic' fires in both states that left four dead and destroyed more than 150 homes. Mr Sheahan firmly believes if he hadn't done his own 'illegal' hazard reduction before Black Saturday, his family would have died.

While the Sheahans made it out of Black Saturday alive and with their house still standing, even with their preparations it was a close call. Throughout the night of February 9 their home caught fire eight times. They also lost several sheds, a Range Rover and two Subarus, as well as a truck and trailer to ember attacks. 'I was in the Country Fire Authority, and so were my son and daughter, so we'd fought fires before and we thought we knew the risks, we thought we were well prepared if a fire came through,' Mr Sheahan said.

'But we found out that day that we were barely adequately prepared.'

Accused cannibal eats part of Grindr date hanging from his ceiling, Michigan cops say

By Dawson White

January 06, 2020 11:06 AM

An officer with the Greenville Police Department in South Carolina provides some advice for avoiding becoming a victim. By Greenville Police Department

Disturbing details have emerged in the case of a Michigan man who allegedly killed his Grindr date, police say.

Kevin Bacon, 25, was reported missing when he didn’t show up for breakfast with his family on Christmas Day, WJBK reported.

It wasn’t long before his car was found outside Family Dollar in Clayton Township with his wallet, phone and clothes inside, according to Michigan Live.

The day before, Bacon — a hairstylist — had told a friend he was meeting up with a man he’d met on the dating app Grindr, Michigan Live reported. Later that evening, Bacon texted his friend that he was having fun and would be out for a while, according to the outlet

Early on Dec. 28, police found Bacon’s body in 50-year-old Mark Latunski’s Morrice-area home, WJBK reported. He was arrested and charged with open murder and mutilation of a human body.

Now, more details have emerged.

According to court documents, police found Bacon hanging naked from the rafters by his ankles in Latunski’s house, WJBK reported.

Police said Latunski confessed to killing Bacon by stabbing him in the back then slicing his throat, also telling police he’d cut off Bacon’s testicles with a knife before eating them, court records say, according to WILX.

The month before, police responded to Latunski’s home after a man, 29, was seen running from Latunski’s home with blood on his face wearing only a leather kilt, according to the outlet.

The man didn’t press charges and following an investigation, police determined no crime had been committed, WILX reported.

Latunski is expected back in court on Jan. 8, Michigan Live reported.

Actor Kevin Bacon, who shares first and last names with the victim, took to Instagram to express his condolences when news broke of the victim’s death last week.

“For obvious reasons I’m thinking this morning about the friends and family of this young person Kevin Bacon,” the “Footloose” actor shared along with a photo of the victim. “His life was taken from him much too soon. His love was hair dressing. I bet he would have done a great job on this mess on my head. RIP KB.”

The victim’s loved ones also painted the Flint Rock in Flint, Mich., to honor Bacon, WEYI reported. The rock now features a rendering of Bacon’s face over a rainbow backdrop along with messages from loved ones, according to the outlet.

Still no end of 737 grounding in sight :
Faulty wiring on both max and NG, would require 7k planes to be fixed, probably not the most expansive thing to fix.
Engines seem to have a manufacturing problem and a design problem

Looks like FAA, like any bureaucracy, is fighting back. They've probably seen that their job were at stake, so they're going to blame their fault on the politicians and throw boeing under the bus. Not that it's totaly unfair, though.

That plane is never going to fly again. They just need to accept the fact, go back to the drawing board, design a new plane - and do it well - and get a good product up and flying in 5-7 years. It will be painful, but the longer they wait the longer til a new plane will be flying and making money.

Seems to confirm what the guy from Mentour pilot was saying, 737 max isn't bad at flying, nor even especialy difficult to fly, it's just not the same beast as the others 737, so pilots should have a specific training for the 737 max. The bad news for Airlines is that there are very few simulators available, and they'll probably need to patch them a lot anyway, I guess. Because the upside of following this route is that they can probably tone down a lot, maybe possibly remove completely the MCAS.

On the plus side, at that point Boeing has a good case for changing the name of the plane... Training pilot, remove MCAS, change the name. Could work imo.

Probably means we're not seing much, maybe even any, 737 max flying in 2020, but it's likely Boeing won't have to scrap all the existings ones, just support the cost of training the pilots AND compensate the airlines for the delay / grounding.

Also mean they really need to start working on that new MOM last year, because under those conditions, no one's ordering 737 max anymore, they'll just want NG or some flavor of airbus.

This has been known for months, in fact shortly after the last crash. It IS a good plane to fly, but handles totally different from previous 737s, but since Boeing wanted older 737 certified pilots to be able to fly it without re-training (to help sell it) they installed these "features" that change the characteristics of the flight from the pilot's perspective to simulate the older models. Stupid stupid fucks. They wouldn't have been in this mess if they'd have just said "yeah, the pilots need a few hours of re-training but otherwise it's a good plane".

I am so sick of seeing “climate change” as the fucking excuse for every god damn thing.

It’s never backed up by any data or back story as to why climate change was determined to be the root cause or even a causal factor either. Someone needs to change the “The Jews did this” head shaking meme to the “Climate change did this” meme

Wow, look at that drop from 1975 to 1979+, I wonder what happened

It's also worth noticing that China has been dominating the country for 20 years (they're about 80% of the FDI, they're selling weapons, they sent 10.000 to 20.000 people there). I'm sure these investment are really paying off for China.

Oh, they're already giving up after 20 years ! I guess they'll cut their losses at 500B

21 year old woman posed as teenage boy to sexually assault up to 50 young girls across the UK
Gemma Watts, 21, travelled the country by train to meet the youngsters, who believed they were in a relationship with a boy close to their own age. Disguised with her long hair tied into a bun and wearing a baseball cap, baggy jogging bottoms and a hoodie, Watts convinced them she was 16-year-old "Jake Waton". Watts was so convincing that she even spent time as Jake with some of the girls' parents.

She used her own picture on Jake's Snapchat and Instagram accounts, targeting girls aged 14-16 by liking their profiles. Watts, who lived at home with her mother in Enfield, north London, shared skateboarding videos, used teenage slang and flattered them with complimentary messages, calling them "babe" or other pet names.

Watts first came to the attention of Hampshire police in March 2018 after a doctor raised concerns that a girl was in a relationship with an older boy. The Met got involved in July that year after the defendant admitted she had been sexually active as Jake with the first three victims.

Watts was finally charged in September and pleaded guilty to seven offences in November, which include:

- Assault by penetration, sexual assault and grooming against 14-year-old girl from Hampshire;

- Sexual assault and grooming against a 15-year-old girl from Surrey;

- Grooming a 15-year-old girl from Plymouth;

- Sexual assault against a 15-year-old girl from the West Midlands.
