I just finished the Axe Druid series. Book 1 wasn't good, I almost quit the series over it. It got better about halfway through book 2. After that it was enjoyable.
It's pretty standard fare overall, swords, access and magic, except the main character is a former marine and it shapes his world. His buddies are along for the ride. Other than minor harem stuff, with way too much repetitive emotional stuff and pining for his real world family I enjoyed everything except the ending.
I think I'm through most of the usual recommendations. Cultivation isn't my favorite. I'll take any recommendation offered at this point. No 20 book series please.
I have to say, the Chrysalis series that Tuco mentioned has held my attention through 6.5 books so far. The dude gets reborn as a monstrous ant in a dungeon, starts out super weak, etc. I thought I'd be turned off by him being an ant forever, but I'm not. I'm sure he will never become human at this point, and if he did I'd probably be disappointed. It is a little bit like everything else where obviously he is never going to die, but that's to be expected in litrpg.
There are pluses and minuses to the series, but overall way more pluses in my mind. I am really enjoying it. Just prepare yourself for the writing style I mentioned before, where the guy is someone who dies at 15 and was reborn, so he acts and reads like a young kid on too much sugar at times. For example, as he is thinking about how he's going to turn the tables on someone, he'll often think, "Gwehehehe!" Which apparently is his laughter. But you get used to it, and it isn't as bad as I'm making it sound.
I recommend it far more than most series now. Since everyone is a fucking ant for the most part, there are no identity or gender politics, the litrpg endless scroll of stats/abilities is only 2-3 times a book later on, and there is absolutely zero navel gazing to cultivate his core. He improves and gains new abilities and shit, but it is more along the lines of playing a video game, accumulating enough points to upgrade something, and then selecting it from a list and blammo, it is upgraded. No having to spend 48 years in seclusion contemplating the juxtaposition of his concept of self vs. the soul construct he's built inside his core, all while consuming natural treasures and bathing in fucking Dao juice or whatever bullshit Defiance of the Fall has added to their repertoire. He does spend some time going over his options and then making a decision, but only a couple of pages here and there. Totally acceptable to me.
They are all on KU as well, which helps immensely.
