I purchased a 5-pack of all different varieties of that "The Grandpa Soap Co" stuff. I'll let you know how that goes.

So that 5-pack came in today. My wife is already complaining that our bathroom smells like a Chinese doctors office. I told her that she needs to be more accepting of Chinese culture. Haha.

Welcome to Kiehl's Canada

Used this for the last little while. Bought a 3-pack that came from Barney's New York for $34. Love this soap, exfoliates extremely well (painful at first use). Really good lather, lasts forever, has a pleasant not too strong smell.

Sadly, they don't do the 3-pack anymore, either way it's too expensive.

I might have to check out that Japanese rag linked on the first page.

Also why your jap wife knows what a Chinese doctors office smells like? sounds suspicious

As a big and hairy guy I find that I burn through bar soap too fast no matter the type. Also with all the additives, especially triclosan I would break out everywhere (chest and bacne). So, one day I stole my wife's camping soap, Dr. Bronners peppermint soap and have never looked back. One, its tingly and that's nice. Two, it does not leave an overwhelming scent after rinsing, I'm not super sensitive or anything but I don't like heavily perfumed soaps. Third, I use it as shampoo as well and a standard bottle lasts 3+ months. That usually averages to 5 bucks a month for soap which is definitely cheap I think. As a caveat, I do shave my head short so I cant guarantee it will last as long with longer hair.

Silly question. Why so much love for bar soap? Even if you hate a loofah type deal, can still slather liquid soap and hand scrub it around?

On a whim I ordered that Dr whatever Castile soap in peppermint, want to do almond next or lavender. (Love marzipan)

On a related note.... other than basically being perfumed at the same time with old spice deodorants..... any huge suggestions on that front? I think i hate gels for making a mess in your shirt reasons. But given I'm headed into a sweaty summer outdoors then in classrooms. Starting to think I need to find the best smell blockers I can. (Directly out of the shower getting sweaty and I am pretty ripe quick.)

I use a wash cloth, liquid soap just doesn’t seem to work with that.

You should supplement chlorophyll for your stank.

Do you like it? I've tried a few of their varieties but I always go back to the pine tar. Love that shit.

The first post I answered why I don't like liquid soap for showering. But it's entirely because I like to stand in the spraying water the entire time, and liquid soap goes away instantly.

As for your deodorant question, I've been using this for a little over a year and it's fucking awesome. I don't have BO any longer, and that's busting my ass in the sun and sweating the entire day. It's glorious.
It's a smooth cylinder of salt. You wet your pits, crotch... hell, anywhere that gets funky when you sweat a lot. Then just rub it on a lot. It's a bar of salt, so you just keep rubbing it until you think it'll be good. The water slowly dissolves the salt it's touching, which is how you get "covered". I don't suggest wetting the salt itself down, because every time you put it away, the water runs down the cylinder and weakens the base where it sits. I've had 2 bars fall out onto the bathroom floor when I flipped it over to do my pits, and when it hits the floor, it explodes into a hundred pieces. Now that I've swapped to wetting my pits directly, the base remains solid for the long haul.

You'll still sweat. This is NOT an anti-antiperspirant. But the salt prevents bacteria that live in your pit hair from reproducing when you start to sweat. And it's the bacteria that causes you to stink. Nothing more. Kill the bacteria, kill the smell. Problem solved.

EDIT: I apply it by wetting my pits right after I finish up with my shower and dry off. Then go to bed. When I wake up, I'll soak my pits a bit more and wipe the "old" salt away and re apply it, just to be safe. That's enough for me. And this single stick (cylinder) will last a year. It's pretty awesome for costing around $7 per.

Haven't tried it yet. I'm finishing up the stuff that I currently have. I brought the charcoal bar with me to Japan, and the old soap is nearly gone. So I'll give a review while I'm out here. I know that it smells awesome. Makes me think of firing up a BBQ every time I open my toiletry bag.

Ok, I used the Grandfather's Soap Co. Pine Tar bar tonight for the first time. I like it a lot.
It's a solid bar. I dropped it shortly after I began my shower and it barely dented. So that's a good sign.
I don't use a sponge or loofah or any of that shit. I'm a soap on the skin type of person. I do both my face and ass by rubbing the bar on my hands then putting it down and using the lather to do that part of the skin. the remainder of my body, I take the bar down a section. IE - My arms, I start at the shoulder and go down to the wrist, a single pass on the outside. Then I take all of the soap that gathers on my hair and use it to rub the body part. This soap lathers very well. I'd give it a +1 over the old Lever 2000, and much better than any of the other new shit that I've tried. I would get a fair amount of bubbles for the entire part I'm cleaning with a single pass of the soap.

After all was said and done, there was a slight slime finish on the bar, so I ran it under water and that rinsed it all off. The bar starts off with a lightly printed "Grandfather's Soap Co" on the front and back. I say lightly, because it's maybe 1/16th of an inch deep, at the most. Other bars are easily double that. Lever 2000 among them. The one side of the bar looked completely untouched. I used it with my hands when I was doing my face then again before I did my ass. It still looked brand new on that side. The other side, which saw the majority of the use can still see the feint letter indentation (you can still read it). So it doesn't appear that much of the soap was used. I can imagine this first bar lasting for 3+ weeks with similar usage. There's my review on the soaps use. But one of the best parts is the scent. It smells delicious. Almost like a BBQ. Also, it doesn't dry my skin out. So A+ in my book. I'll look forward to seeing how the other bars work out, but if they're anything like this, I expect good things.

I've been using that new soap every night since I opened it, and the bar still looks practically unused (letters on both sides of the soap are gone now). And it smells great. I'm very happy with this purchase.

Not a bar but, for giggles I bought some hippy-dippy socialist magic mushroom eater hemp oil / tea tree oil soap on an Amazon lightning deal. I would have never guessed but its been a life changer. Castile Soaps are oil based so you arent drying out your skin / hair. I do all body with it and because of the anti-bacterial / anti-fungal properties of the tea tree oil I have no more dandruff, no more jock itch, no more athelete's foot, no more pimples on my ass and back. Dont need conditioner for my hair anymore because it isnt stripping all the oil out . It takes getting used to because it doesnt lather up as much as traditional detergent based soaps and it doesnt give you that I just sandblasted off the top layer of skin feeling, but it gets you clean.

Socialism may not work but their nudist commune soap does.

Just got their peppermint from this thread. Not sure how different it is from the one you got. I want to tru almond/lavender.

I like mine for very mild tingle, not near as good/strong as like barber shop tea tree shampoo. I love that the tiny squirt into loofa makes for an absurd amount of suds.

So tried this, also Charcoal first. While I was in the shower I was like I don't see what the fuss is about. I will say that after getting out of the shower and drying off I thought to myself "my skin feels good today" and it stayed that way for longer than normal.

OK, I have a question for those piloting out these ever so manly shower soaps... Especially if you came to this from using one of those liquid body wash products.

I currently use Old Spice Body Wash (Bearglove to be exact mostly because.. well... Terry Cruise). But whereas I smell fresh, I don't have that clean feeling I remember from my youth using bars of soap. Do these products change the "clean feel" for you?

I definitely feel clean. That mostly has to do with oils though. My skin is very oily. Not disgustingly so, but oily none the less. My shaved starts to shine a few hours after I shower. People think that I buff it, but it's just what happens after I shave and shower.

Also, I realized that I'm an asshole. I was looking at the other 4 bars to see the styles that I still have left, and I saw Charcoal. It turns out that I've been using pine tar, not charcoal. And honestly, I like the smell of it. It still reminds me a lot of a BBQ, but that might be because my initial thought was that it was charcoal scent. The "real" charcoal doesn't smell like anything to me. The bar still looks barely used, but I'm still going. Also, now that I'm back in Hawaii from my trip to Japan, I've noticed that the bar doesn't make as much suds as it did out there. The water must be a little harder out here. Still makes plenty of suds, but not an over abundance of them.
