Update: various action pics from last weekend. Really like how my rats and most of the terrain turned out. Got a couple big pieces that need some additional detail work but didn't stick out too much from the rest.

What game is that Warr Warr ? The new version of Mordheim (skirmish)?

Since covid broke 18 months ago I've been dying to get back into modeling terrain, painting armies, and playing. But, I can't do full scale Fantasy/40k anymore. There's too much required and no one to play with. I'd love to be able to build, paint, and play a skirmish type game (from any manufacturer, not necessarily GW) that my wife will also enjoy being a part of since it should be easier to absorb. Does anyone have a recommendation on a system that's fun, but not overly complicated or obnoxious? I feel like there's too many options these days and I'm out of touch with all of them.

Warcry from GW. Storyline is in the new Mortal Realm fantasy setting but it does it have a little of that verticality and certainly scratches the same itch that old-school Mordheim did.

Rules and warband construction are super streamlined compared to big AoS / 40k. Warbands are 1000 points and all the miniatures have a set profile and points. Like a plague monk is 70 points, a Rat Ogre 225. So you can actually do up a list in your head, the math is that easy. Fighting is equally streamlined. Roll X number of attacks, you need a 3/4/5+ to hit based on your strength vs toughness, and every hit does Y damage, and every natural 6 is a crit for Z damage. Mark off the HP and on to the next action.

We are having a lot of fun with it, but it's definitely not balanced for competitive play. Some units are definitely undercosted and you randomly pull the deployments and scenario from a deck that will make or break you before the game even begins. But as a casual game or a gateway in the hobby, I can't recommend it enough.

Okay I bought a bunch of sigmar shit on a whim and now I'm rather petrified by the sheer number of figures I kind of committed myself to painting.

I got the Soul Wars ultimate boxed set because my kid liked the ghosts better than the orcs in the new set and I can't blame him. I have a couple of cans of spray paint for the base and a couple of paint kits for the detail. Figure spraypaint base in the yard for ventilation and dry there and bring inside for more detailed paint work? Does that seem reasonable? I also bought the recruit 40k kit and paint set and also the 2nd ed sigmar recruit set for my stepdaughter to paint. Just what have I gotten myself into?

Yeah well put it this way, I saw a post here on miniature painting over 2 years ago and I'm still doing it.

Yep prime them black with the spray cans then it's really 3d paint by numbers. Do your best to put gold where the gold goes, blue where the blue goes etc. Have fun with it!

LOL yeah the stacks of unpainted gray plastic plague us all. It's become a meme at this point. When I got back in I had to be very careful to not overcommit and repeat past mistakes. Just realize it's a marathon, not a sprint.

The spray primer like you said and then detail work is a good start. There's a ton of painting tutorials out there on YouTube now. Some are better for beginners than others. The one thing I can't recommend enough is the Army Painter washes (or GW Agrax Earthsahde / Nuln Oil) for after you do your base coat / detail work. They call that stuff "liquid talent" for a reason. It will cover up a lot of little mistakes and if you set up the base colors right, you won't have to do anything after that, just give them some matte varnish and you're done.

There’s a bunch of beginners tips and equipment recommendations at the beginning of this thread that should be helpful to your new endeavor.

Funny you say that because literally the FIRST two videos I watched had washes and they added a lot of personality and layering without a lot of effort and I knew I was gonna have to go get some of THAT too before I could really get going haha, what a delightful nightmare.

The types of paints and stuff we have to work with today are amazing compared to the last time I was active in the hobby (about 12 years ago). People used to be dipping their minis in furniture wax or varnish to get that effect.

If you guys liked the old style citadel paint handle but can't stand the new one, a Taiwanese company named U-Star copied it and include both tops and a little base for it. Cost me less than 10usd but I have no idea what kind of availability it would be for you guys.

Husband bought another 2 Armada squadron packs for me to paint, adding to the 30 or so damn squads I have to paint already. The gray plague is real for sure.

Meanwhile I’m going to be trying my hand at adding some painted details to the Shadow Fox I got in recently. Not sure how it’ll turn out; just going to try painting tiny bolts and such in places and putting a little varnish to try and protect it from getting scratched off.

After reading your post, I realized how much stuff I have not painted yet and I have the Soul Wars and Dominion box. I spent the weekend painting up the Nighthaunt (I did the SCE months ago). Work has been so crazy so my hand was shakey until I kept on. Nighthaunt are so fun to paint because they're like Dark Souls mobs. I also painted Kainan. His front looks like absolute shit in the photo...

Awesome stuff Leviothan Leviothan

I'm switching schemes for my Stormcast. Going Silver as the primary. I just base coated this one with metallics so far but I'm already liking it more. I'm still planning to do purple for the shield.

That is really cool. I was also thinking of doing silvered armor and a red trim (like the Mason order in Chivalry 2). Silver just looks so good on these new SCE models. That's a great even paint you did there for the armor.

Got a little burned out painting so have had a break from it all summer. Just built the kits I had bought so not to have a backlog. These are the unpainted Gunplas atm, will take a while to paint all of these up. 😅

This might be the best/only place to ask, but does anyone know of a miniature out there that could even be altered to look like Bertoxxulous? :)

Best I've found that give me a bertoxx vibe so far is ""Games Workshop 99070201009 Nurgle Rotbringers Lord of Plagues""
