Been enjoying this for the brief time I’ve been playing this. Especially the total lack of info for anything is one of the best things for this game. Took me forever to find my class trainer lol.

So since this might be one of the few places with knowledge on these things, anyone playing enchanter that did the wincog quests? I went to the first guy that he ports you to and tried to trade his bag or each time inside it to the Beito guy but he doesn’t want it and I’m not sure if it’s just broken or if I’m doing something wrong

If it's the one I'm thinking of, did you hit combine with all 4 quest items in the bag?

I just can't get motivated to play this. I thought this test with lots of people on would do it, but it's just...not.

Like, I had my lfg flag on and some dude invited me to a group in Telekir, and the thought of running there for 20 minutes made me close the game and do something else.

I keep coming back to it, but there's a reason games stopped doing shit like this. I think gamers romanticize EverQuest but the majority of it fucking sucked.

I think this highlights one of the biggest pitfalls of trying to recreate a "classic" MMO experience: not everything that was present in those early games was actually good design. A 20-minute run just to join a group isn't challenge, it isn't immersion, and it isn't meaningful. It's just busywork. And busywork doesn't build community, it just burns patience.

The issue with something like a 20-minute run to a group isn't simply that it "takes time." The real problem is that the activity doesn't add anything new to your experience. You're not being challenged, you're not meaningfully engaging with the world, and you're not building toward a larger sense of accomplishment. You're basically just waiting. That's where older mechanics, like hell levels or travel times, often cross the line from being "immersive" to simply being tedious.

And you're right: a lot of what gets romanticized about EverQuest wasn't necessarily the mechanics themselves, but the social fabric that emerged in spite of them. People remember the friendships, the rivalries, etc., but that doesn't mean every design quirk that surrounded those memories was inherently good. There's a difference between systems that encourage organic interdependence (group incentives, class synergies, shared challenges) and systems that just slow you down.

What makes or breaks a game like Monsters & Memories isn't whether it faithfully recreates every piece of friction from 1999. It's whether it can strike a balance: building in enough risk, danger, and interdependence that grouping feels natural and rewarding, while stripping away the "artificial difficulty" that comes from time sinks disguised as gameplay. So far, I'm not convinced they're striking that balance. They appear to almost just be attempting a "one for one" remake of EQ.

And ultimately, if someone logs off at the mere thought of making the run to content, that's not a sign of healthy friction. That's a sign that the design is leaning too far into nostalgia-for-nostalgia's-sake, rather than actually supporting the social, communal experience people claim to miss from the old days.

Can’t imagine playing this game without a group of people I already know. I don’t think the population is there to support lots of lfg type stuff esp when you add in the chaos of random fags leaving whenever. At least in eq it wasn’t too bad finding subs if you were in popular zones. Maybe this game will eventually reach that critical mass but an alpha test won’t.

I mean, personally I'm not willing to play much because I don't want to invest in characters that will likely be deleted or at least won't be on a server I'll end up playing on. Doesn't really need to be more complicated than that and certainly doesn't mean it's a bad design

I decided to test it out. It took me 6:09 to run there from the western gate with sow, not including the time it took to get sow.

8:57 to get there without sow.

So I might've been a bit hyperbolic, but it still fucking sucks. 9 minutes of just running.

It's why I responded to someone in the AoC thread the other day talking about how massive the world is like it's a good thing, when 90% of it's just going to be empty space you need to traverse for no apparently reason. Yeah, I get it, it makes the world feel "bigger" (not just literally), but is it actually fun?

I dunno man… what’s the alternative to a 6-9 minute run? That’s around how long the griffin flight from Ironforge to Eastern Plaguelands took. Let alone the run to Stratholme once you landed.

I mean, I wouldn't know, the last time I played WoW was about 20 years ago.

If you ever wonder why MMORPG's are a dying niche, it might be because 10 minutes of travel time to "the next zone over" is standard instead of actually playing the game.

I mean yea, MMOs probably aren't for you anymore if a 9 minute run is a deal breaker. This genre is and always has been a massive time sink.

Dungeon finder is the other end of the spectrum here but it has a ton of other issues that suck. You can argue that it should only be a 3 minute run! But honestly there's a deeper problem here with your expectations vs what this game is

The thing that's killing mmorpg's are people with 20 minutes of playtime expecting an online rpg experience.

And yet I've got thousands of hours on the EZ (Extended Zones) server on EQ emu. It's a server that cut out all the fucking retarded shit and lets you just enjoy the game. It's grindy as all hell.

GM gnomified us all, then gave us various skelly illusions. The dwarf skelly aninmations are pretty fantastic. Falls apart and reforms. Plus the beard is pretty top kek.

Can't you box entire raids there? I mean it's in EQ but it's not exactly an MMO experience, regardless of the EQ skin. I don't disagree with the core of your point, both types of games can and should exist. MnM simply isn't the EZ server, and it's not trying to be.

Plenty of games that cater to the type of play style you're expressing. No sense in trying to change one of the few that doesn't
