Weren’t there some forum bets being made over sub counts? I could swear there were some people claiming they’d never get more than 5k subs or I think was even less, but not sure if they pussied out and put some qualifier on it like 12 months into release or some shit
1 year into release is where you will see whether they can get past their lack of content and instancing. I think they will Pantheon out before all that, though. The masochists who want all the worst parts of vanilla EQ will bail as they cannibalize themselves. This has all happened before.

I wonder what they need to not just satisfy 'back pay' for folks, but meaningfully invest into the product and accelerate development. Old comments from the team suggest 15k as a goal number, and it looks like they may fall short of that for day 1 at least.

Is Faelindral/Evershade Weald even complete yet? Like fully kitted out with scene details and quest NPCs etc? That first became playable in April 2025, so presumably development started nearly two years ago on that zone.

If development doesn't speed up we're looking at many years until 1.0 is ready.

Never forget the post launch week push, 15k would be insane 10-12k is very likely. Past the first month though we will see.

The bigger issue is people who pay have actual expectations the team is going to have to deliver on. Even a pay for play EA (again, Pantheon did this same shit). They are going to have to get roadmaps out and actually deliver on them in the timeframes they lay out. Fail to deliver? Goodbye subs. Fail to communicate? Goodbye subs. Fail to address the glaring problems you made with bad design decisions? Goodbye subs.

I hope they can pull it off, because I like having fun MMOs to play. But I am not going to get into this until it has proven itself. The hype train with no follow through is a tiresome pattern in this industry.

EW newb quests have been in for awhile now. They were boned for a bit after they rejiggered trade skills to need recipe purchases. But those vendors have been added. It took them way longer to get that place fleshed out than it apparently took underdocks. But they added quite a few people since ew first got added in it’s barebones state. Dedicated quest people and zone builders seems to have sped things along substantially.

So is it done? Or at least 90%+ done like Night Harbour?

I don’t think anything is done done, but aside from being way smaller than NH, it’s good enough to start there with no complaints. Done enough for this state of the game anyway.

Probably the big brain start area, likely to be the smallest pop.

Ok so nearly 2 years later their second starter city still needs completion and polish. I don’t think that’s anything to be ashamed of, just indicates what can be reasonably expected with zero to low budget.

I mean it is a city run by vegan librarians who live in trees I’m not sure “well run, polished society” is really the flavor there

Keep in mind that whatever their sub count is for EA launch is likely as high as it ever gets. Very, very few MMOs grow their player base after launch, especially in 2026.

Once they have 10k paypigs that low budget won't be as big of an issue no?

that's only $1.8mil/yr and they have 50 people on the team. They’ve said they want to prioritize paying 30 people and about a dozen are really critical pay them now folks.

I’ll leave you to do the math on 30 game dev salaries spread over $1.8mil… minus taxes, overhead, marketing, etc

In 2026? With no MTX or alternate revenue sources? Yeah, 10k isn't going to sustain you long. Especially with how much infrastructure costs, servers, hardware costs, etc. etc.

$150,000/month in revenue before ANY opex in 2026 is absolute peanuts.

Any shit talking about sub counts were from me asking people to explain the math on how they were going to run a live service game in 2026 on 10k subs and it sounds like they don't even have that.

Not sure it's a great barometer but the reddit sub seems a lot busier since beta ended with new people asking about it. Either way I had enough fun im gonna just enjoy the ride.
