Watched a VOD recently and Shawn’s justification for every character not getting gate was that it just didn’t ‘feel right’. He’d sooner ‘take gate from everyone’ before giving it to everyone.
He pointed to opportunities to create value or ‘chase items’ from the gate ability, either through religion choice or quest items or player made economy or what have you.
I fundamentally disagree with this stance as I’ve detailed before. A player should have unhindered control over when they end their play session. They should have this ability from the moment of character creation with zero barrier.
This is not a thing they should gamify, and they’ll pay a significant subscriber price for doing so - subscribers who otherwise do fit their target player archetype.
I think this is a huge and unnecessary mistake.
