what were they before they brought the servers up?
“It just doesn’t feel right” is basically their response to anything where they just copied EverQuest but don’t have much justification beyond that.Watched a VOD recently and Shawn’s justification for every character not getting gate was that it just didn’t ‘feel right’. He’d sooner ‘take gate from everyone’ before giving it to everyone.
He pointed to opportunities to create value or ‘chase items’ from the gate ability, either through religion choice or quest items or player made economy or what have you.
I fundamentally disagree with this stance as I’ve detailed before. A player should have unhindered control over when they end their play session. They should have this ability from the moment of character creation with zero barrier.
This is not a thing they should gamify, and they’ll pay a significant subscriber price for doing so - subscribers who otherwise do fit their target player archetype.
I think this is a huge and unnecessary mistake.

There's a gate potion, it's expensive now but you can have one
If you've got 30 seconds without things beating on you, you have unhindered control over ending your gaming session. I'm not sure why you're hung up on hearthstones. Doesn't their existence greatly diminish the feel they're going for with the big open world?Watched a VOD recently and Shawn’s justification for every character not getting gate was that it just didn’t ‘feel right’. Bullshit. You can’t end your gaming session deep in a dungeon without penalty on many classes. Hell, can you emergency camp out on a boat?
Unacceptable and it’s not negotiable.
If there's no danger it's not a eq style mmo really though.
Bullshit. The danger should exist in the game world itself, not in worrying if i get suddenly called into work or if my kid falls off their bike.
These are contradictory mutually exclusive statements that can't be reconciled, there can be no real dangers and hence no real accomplishments if they have to coddle your playtime.
If it's really bad just get a corpse summon later
The punishment is the point.
Ridiculous stance. Allowing players to end their gaming session on demand without penalty is not ‘coddling’ anything.
you can just camp out? like what am I missing here. alt +f4 if you really have an emergancy, you can cr later or run out later if you have to. or get this if you know you have to drive your kid from soccer practive leave early
I am specifically talking about emergencies.
I have specifically stated there should be no penalty, and a CR is a penalty.
