I haven't touched the game in over a year: what classes are good, and/or fun?

(No, of course I didn't read any of the last 40 pages of this thread)

They are all fun to me, pick what sounds good to you. There will be more tuning coming, so who knows how classes will shake out until they get it where they want it.

I get that people are gonna do this shit but , and no offense to noodleface (not sure why but I feel like I’ve seen your dick on here at some point or am I thinking of someone else) but I highly recommend against using these things. A big part of the fun of this game is exploring places you haven’t been before. I remember my first time going into blacktide bay and thinking whoah when does this zone end, and was a blast finally finding the boat area. But with this map you’ll just be like oh , that’s cool, big zone and a big part of the fun is gone.

personally I think you guys should treat it like a movie or good tv show and avoid spoilers
Modern convenience genie got out of that bottle years ago. No maps? Someone will fix it if the devs don't. No quest db? Someone will fix it.

Yeah I've added quest markers and I intend to include a tab that allows you to search for quests. This is all hypothetical because I haven't had a chance to add a single marker to this tool.

And this screenshot doesn't tell us what you seem to think it tells us. 25,019 active subscriptions isn't 25,019 players, and 6,140 concurrent users isn't 6,140 unique people who have demonstrated that they want a near 1:1 recreation of 1999 EverQuest's design philosophy indefinitely.

The 25k is ultimately the number that matters, the most. Very few people picked the boxing server. It's easily 90-95% Unique people.
The game has been in EA for a week, that number will obviously continue to climb until at least the end of this month.
Games typically don't peak in EA, but peak when the 1.0 drops.
Unless the numbers seriously tank in the next few months they'll be fine for a long time.

Who did you try to buy the axe from? On the shady vendors its very high. There are q few npcs that have it in UD for cheaper, or you can pay ludicrous prices from the shady vendors. Don't buy from shady vendors, they underpay and overcharge for convenience.

Maybe av doesn't have a lumberjack vendor or garrison vendor?

AV only the shady guy Jul sells the axe. I got it in UD from a dwarf dude for 20c vs 1s

Don’t know if I just missed the spell price change, but /before/ my FD spell was 40ish silver, it was 6 when I got to UD.

mnmatlas.com on another screen gang reporting in. the weird thing is I haven't needed to look at it once because the zones aren't that difficult to commit to memory based on landmarks. I think they did a pretty good job, but RIP any classes without SoW or bards. SoW + Gate is just incredibly useful in this game to such a degree that I can't really imagine playing anything without at least one of them. I tried rogue, but couldn't commit. No gate, no sow, no utility spells, same damage as most other dps or even lower, but spellblade apparently does more dps, looks cooler and gets gate later on. No wonder there are barely any rogues, what am I missing here? They're gonna do 5% more damage when they're maxed out on gear? They still won't have any of the useful spells, and afaik they don't bring anything unique to the party that would make you want to bring one. What am I missing here?

My big problem with mnmatlas is it was open source, then he closed it and didn't really disclose his use of AI. It comes off as someone hand drew though. Also doesn't have my supreme dungeon mapping technology.

Amods how do we ban this guy or did I post an empty threat in the gmotd?!?

Someone said spell prices were patched today?

It was, you should keep an eye on their discord. They seem to be patching almost every day and they put the notes there. They upload them to the launcher as well, but they can be delayed.

I don't disagree that 25k active subscriptions is the more important number commercially. What I disagree with is the amount people are extrapolating from that number.

First, the "90-95% unique people" claim is a complete assumption unless the developers have actually provided that breakdown. The fact that relatively few people chose the boxing server doesn't establish that 90-95% of those subscriptions represent unique people. Someone can have multiple subscriptions without ever touching the boxing server (people who believe people don't box because it isn't "allowed" clearly don't understand how the modern internet/computers work). Even if 95% are unique, though, that still doesn't answer the question I'm asking.

Second, saying the number will "obviously continue to climb" is pure speculation. It might. But we're talking about one week of Early Access. Early Access launches are precisely when you have your most concentrated wave of curious players, existing EQ fans, influencers, friends dragging friends in, and people wanting to see what the game is all about. Some of those people will stick around, some won't. That's what the next several months are going to tell us, especially once you have games people have been hyped about releasing.

And yes, games can peak at 1.0 rather than Early Access. They can also peak at EA launch and decline. There's no rule that says an MMO's population necessarily has to keep climbing simply because 1.0 hasn't happened yet. That depends on retention, content cadence, word of mouth, and whether the game can continually replace the players it loses.

That's ultimately the point I'm making. 25k subscriptions after one week tells us that there is an audience for MnM. It does not tell us what the long-term audience will be (or even short-term, since 1 week is virtually meaningless in terms of retention on a game the requires 30 days MINIMUM just to get in the door). If they still have 20-25k active subscriptions months from now, great. If they grow to 50k, even better. If they settle at 10k and that's enough to comfortably support the game, fantastic. I'd be happy to admit I was wrong.

But "25k after one week + MMOs sometimes grow after 1.0 = they'll be fine for a long time" is just speculation. You're taking the most optimistic possible trajectory and treating it as the inevitable one. And that's especially relevant to what I've actually been arguing. I've never said "nobody wants MnM." The numbers have already disproven that and there are a lot of gaming masochists out there. I've always questioned whether the extremely "old-school" design philosophy they're reproducing has the long-term appeal and sustainability that people are assuming it does.

Basically, you're arguing with me about a conclusion I haven't made. I never said MnM doesn't have an audience. I'm saying we don't yet know how large its enduring audience is and whether it's enough to support the game financially long-term. That's precisely what the next 3-12 months are going to tell us.

Most are good and fun, if you going solo pick Beastmaster or necro, grouping whichever looks fun as it doesn't matter.

basically all of the FQ is sort of shady with their prices. it's ass to buy anything. the upper city kind of helps but it is missing a ton of vendors.

Who gives a shit. The game is fun and good. It still has a long ways to go, making it possibly one of the greats or utter trash. Who knows....

I do not know that it's worth engaging. I find the game fun. If it dies, it dies. At least they tried something and it hooked me.

The numbers they give include monthly active for each server. 96% of accounts haven't logged into the boxing server. There isn't really a reason to have a non-boxing related second account on MnM and i haven't seen any obvious boxing on Estaire.

Second, saying the number will "obviously continue to climb" is pure speculation.

No, it's not speculation. It can only go up until the end of the first month. Since people will continue to join and no active accounts will be expiring to make the number go down.

Pantheon did gangbusters with their EA launch. More than this game if memory serves. People played hard for a couple months, then the torpid progress made by the dev team squandered it all. 2 years later they have 10s of people playing on the daily. EQL is in the middle of the same thing. This game will have the same opportunity to show what output the devs can churn out now that they are charging money. Their staunch opposition to QOL is going to be another barrier they need to overcome. Time will tell.
