I guess these guys are going out on their own. They've gained a lot of experience in the structures necessary to maintain a WoW type game with a small audience.

You would be 1000% correct to assume that they are, deliberately, making a WoW clone type game with various changes. If that is the scope they intend to go with they might have a chance at succeeding. Either way should produce something interesting to follow for awhile.

It's been a while since we had a new MMO to be interested in. I hope they succeed.

However, their success in modding the greatest (from a technical perspective) MMO ever made is completely moot when talking about creating their own from the ground up.

If they are purposely targeting a WoW clone in the same style as WoW classic I think they have a reasonable chance at success. Their audience was never all that big.

No reason to believe that they will be making something that isn't a distinct WoW derivative.
