Willem Dafoe in a new thriller piqued my interest, so the teaser dropped, and I checked it out.

From theater maker Nadia Latif in her directorial feature debut, adapted from the Walter Mosley novel of the same name, the upcoming thriller stars Hawkins as Charles Blakey, a young African American man on the verge of losing his ancestral home in the historically Black neighborhood of Sag Harbor, New York, due to foreclosure.
A knock on the door one day from a peculiar white businessman, introduced as Anniston Bennet (Dafoe), presents a strange offer: the older gentleman would like to rent out the home's dusty basement for the summer in exchange for funds that would be enough to clear Charles' debt for good. Charles accepts, but soon finds himself led down a dark path that confronts his family's ghosts. While Latif's iteration stays close to the source material, which touches on themes like race, power, and morality, she does change up a few beats: The film is set in 1994, about a decade before the novel takes place, to coincide with the distant backdrop of the Rwandan genocide during the Rwandan Civil War. This allowed the filmmaker to paint a more expansive portrait about colonialism, the transatlantic slave trade, and "who gets to tell whose history," she says.

It looks better than the racist man in the basement movie, but then again I'm a sucker for survival out in the winter films, especially if there's a supernatural element or something. It's just such a nice setting. Not saying it looks amazing but it might be worth a spin on shudder.

Trailer does look good and seems interesting enough, judging by early reviews. Just a bit tired of the DEI placement. I think there is only one single Black woman in the world to be a field geoengineer with claimed extensive experience in uranium exploration, compared to white women that make up more than 15% of all field geoengineers.

Hopefully, this isn't a new trend of Netflix only releasing dubbed trailers for their foreign productions.

You know those shitty AI-voiced channels on YT that summarize films? I hate them so much. But...a movie like this might be perfect for that treatment, because I know I don't want to watch 90 minutes of this, but a 15 min summary might be tolerable while I'm eating lunch or something.

My first thought was “Boy, they really moved fast on the 2025 LA ICE riots movie.”

Who is this shit for?
Who the fuck knows.

I mean I remember seeing the original one back in high school or something after the original Scream came out. It had that chick with the big titties from that stupid Fox family show. I don't remember her name, but it was playing at the little three screen movie theater we had in town so you went and watched on the with your friends.

I didn't recognize anybody in the damn trailer so it's probably a bunch of nobody's and just made on a super cheap budget, and their banking on you'll get a new crop of kids maybe to go and see it. That whole Blumhouse model that the RLM guys always talk about.

Maybe it also has something to do with some sort of rights to the original, who the hell knows.

The chick with big titties from the original (Jennifer Love Hewitt) is in this one, as is Freddie Prinze Jr. So not only are they pretty much remaking the original, they are trying to play upon nostalgia by including the old actors and somehow making it as if this is all related. It looks godawful bad.

That's her name, couldn't remember, but she was a total smoke show back in the day.
