I think that in a situation like this, there's bound to be a few surprises/upsets. My big issue with the team is that they didn't seem to focus or care much in reference to the ice surface when selecting the players. Keep in mind it's been decades since either the US or Canada won on the larger ice and there's a reason for that.

I also found Burke's comments in reference to Ryan to be disgusting. I don't think that you publicizes something like that in reference to an olympic hopeful.

Got a link for the Burke comments?

I hope Canada goes with projected lineups with mostly young talented players that play 20+ minutes per games. I dont think the grindy style of the USA team will fare well on a big surface...

"I think we have to know what we're taking with Bobby," said Burke, who was the Anaheim Ducks' general manager when they drafted and developed Ryan. "He's a passive guy. He is not intense. That word is not in his vocabulary. It's never going to be in his vocabulary. He can't spell intense."

Burke is a pompous asshole who thinks that he's some sort of fucking genius. It's no surprise that he'd say that kind of shit, he doesn't know what diplomacy or tact are.

I think that Canada made a mistake leaving Hall off the roster, personally. Yes, Canada's roster is wicked deep, but the fact is that other than Stamkos there isn't a player on that roster who is as fast of a skater or as pure of a goal scorer as Hall is. He'd be unreal on the Olympic ice surface, opposing defensemen would have a hell of a time stopping him. I don't think it effects the team's chances to any significant degree, I just wanted to see him on that ice playing that caliber of hockey.

Team Canada announced:

http://www.thestar.com/sports/sochi2...ey_roster.html

Notable omissions: Joe Thornton (48 points in 43 games and been the league's best playmaker for over a decade), Martin St. Louis (has kept it up even without Stamkos in the lineup), Claude Giroux (arguably the league's hottest scorer right now), and Marc-Andre Fleury (been having a stellar season, better than Luongo or Smith, but has struggled mightily on the big stage the last couple of years), among others.

I definitely don't like Chris Kunitz being on the team, but that's just my opinion. I think that Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Dan Hamhuis are interesting choices, but I really like Hamhuis. I am thrilled to see Jay Bouwmeester on the team. Pretty good squad, I think our selections and omissions are a lot better than the US's (no Kyle Okposo, Dustin Byfuglien, or Ben Bishop were all really bad omissions on their part), but I don't know how this is going to play out. Sweden is going to have a stellar squad, Russia has the home-ice edge, and the US has had the best development over the past several years (although, as I already mentioned, they omitted some players they really shouldn't have). I think if Canada is going to repeat they're going to have to outscore their opponents at times; even though Carey Price is an excellent goaltender (and hopefully he plays every second of every important game because I don't have much faith in the other two goaltenders who were named) I still think that the rest of the world has caught up and surpassed us in terms of goaltending. At the Olympics, winning by outscoring your opponent is not a winning strategy, and based on that and the roster that we've named, I'm a little apprehensive, but we have to go in as the favourites as per usual.

Wow Kunitz made it? Silly, if they don't put him on a line with Sid it will look even more silly.

And the fact Thornton getsallof his points from assists doesn't make him a better "playmaker" than Crosby or St. Louis=P

Pens just scored 2 goals in about 20 seconds with under 90 seconds to go(goalie pulled). Tied 4-4 with 54 seconds left now. Fun period, but man the D is suddenly awful these last couple games. Tanner Glass was especially shitty on the 3rd Canucks goal.

edit: Pens win in shootout. Fleury still perfect in shootouts this season. Dan Bylsma officially winningest coach in Pens history.

Agreed with Kunitz. My understanding of the situation is that Crosby's style of play is extremely difficult for a winger to compliment consequently Team Canada brought him in after he showed that he was 'olympic quality'. I don't really agree with it but I can see the logic.

The defense is also a little rough but they were making sure that they were going to have the defensemen play at their natural position and a guy like Seabrook probably got shafted because of that.

Joe Thornton not being on team Canada is beyond retarded. I'm happy MEV made it -- easily one of the most underrated dmen in the league. It's a shame cooter didn't make it(stupid hand surgery). I'm pretty surprised Marleau made it, not that he doesn't totally deserve it but with the way the press treats him it's honestly surprising.

Most of the press are pretty retarded when it comes to judging players... As for Thornton, there was absolutely no place for someone that cant elevate his game when it matters with the quality of centers canada already has.

I'm a bit disappointed St. Louis didn't end up on team Canada, but that roster is just so overly stacked. Maybe if Stamkos can't go they'll replace him with Marty? I can only hope.

9 fucking minutes worth of power play to start the game against the Canucks and the Kings don't fucking score. God damn. Lol, now the last 48 seconds of that the Kings are going to get a 5 on 3.
