Whelp, Toronto shit the bed. Squandered a 5-1 lead in the second to lose 5-6. To fucking OTTAWA. It makes sense, though. Now that games start to matter more watch Toronto's win percentage drop like a stone.

They do make a few compelling arguments.
The goalies are huge, and now they do butterfly, so these huge bodies are covering most of the nets. Plus, there is no limit to the height of goalie pads, just width, so that effectively takes away the five-hole. That pretty much makes the scorable area in the net smaller. By a lot. They made comparisons to basketball - if the same thing applied, they would basically shrink the basket size by two or three inches. The ball still fits, just harder to get it through.
It's an interesting thought. As goalies got bigger their technique changed to make use of their huge bodies - before butterfly they were standing upright. Being 6'6" was of no benefit then. Now, all that body bulk is down in the net. As an interesting thought experiment, which would you rather: increase the height of the net so it is 6' wide and 5' high, or width to 7' wide and 4' high? If they made it higher it would immediately have in impact on the butterfly technique. We'd probably have a bunch more stand up goalies all of a sudden.

No. They reduced goalie gear size recently (last couple years) and it helped some, also goalie sv% around the league is down this year quite a bit. Give it a few years to see how stable the increased scoring is, but no need to freak out when scoring is actually up the last couple seasons.
