I'm replying 2 years late, but in between I also played through Faxanadu... some of its mechanisms are extremely crude, even for the time. Most notably the fact they could not spare a couple bytes to store general game progression such as boss kills, unlocked doors or broken walls. This gives the game a weird groundhog days feeling as just about everything resets on screen transitions...

Lol yes there are some annoying things about faxanadu, esp that things just repop- like those lightning clapping dudes that do a screen wide hit.

But as I said, there are still a bunch of things it is ahead of many other games.
