I'm replying 2 years late, but in between I also played through Faxanadu... some of its mechanisms are extremely crude, even for the time. Most notably the fact they could not spare a couple bytes to store general game progression such as boss kills, unlocked doors or broken walls. This gives the game a weird groundhog days feeling as just about everything resets on screen transitions...Faxanadu was very advanced for its time (armor changes character) etc. good music and imo was the best of its "related" series. I would love to do a kickstarter or something for a nice remake of that game.
