RTX 5090 Owner Says NVIDIA Refused His RMA After Faded Serial Number, As More Redditors Report The Same GPU Defect
This is our first time covering this type of report, but it isn't a rare incident. The Reddit user/Willing-Avocado-4830 opened a thread in r/NVIDIA claiming that NVIDIA rejected his RTX 5090 Founders Edition warranty claim without giving any reasons. As per the post, the GPU is nearly one year old and was bought directly from the NVIDIA UK store.
The user reports seeing black-screen crashes when the GPU operated under full load recently, prompting him to contact NVIDIA for an RMA claim. After sending the GPU to NVIDIA, the user waited for over a month but didn't hear from the company. A few days ago, one of NVIDIA's representatives reportedly informed the user that his RMA had been rejected, and they would ship his GPU back.
However, they didn't give any reason for the RMA rejection. After contacting the company again, the user was informed that his GPU's serial number on the metal bracket had faded, making it "unreadable", which resulted in RMA rejection.
The user argues that his warranty claim shouldn't be rejected as he still owns the original packaging and the proof of purchase, which should help NVIDIA identify the product and continue with the repair/replacement. Nonetheless, this is where things get complicated. We couldn't find anything that explicitly says whether fading of the serial number on the GPU's bracket should cause an RMA rejection or not.
However, this issue appears to be more widespread than we thought. In the comments, several more users reported seeing faded serial numbers on the GPU bracket after a few months of use. One RTX 5080 FE owner reported a similar RMA rejection story, which confirms that NVIDIA is likely rejecting RMA claims based on the readability of the serial number.
