I just came here to bitch.

Fucking windows update last night blew up somehow. Woke up and my computer was hosed. Booting to screaming fans and a black screen. Reset cmos and all that. Turns out the update fucked up one of my ram sticks.. Unfixable. Matching the other one a crap shoot on ebay.

So I had to pay Newegg over $600 fucking dollars for 32 gb... FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCKKKKK AI!!!!

I don't usually have issues, especially that bad. Never that bad in fact. Stick was probably going bad anyway and the update just pushed it along.

But the timing. Jesus it's criminal how much decent ram costs today.

yeah one of the drives on my plex nas server started reporting errors, i did get an RMA from serverpartdeals where i bought it a year ago but i bought an extra one off ebay (mfg refurb) for almost $700. same exact drive cost me $280 a year ago. it fucking sucks how AI slop has let companies triple prices on everything.

not coincidentally a bunch of reports out this week that PC sales are down like 30%, console sales down 25%, etc. no shit sherlock, food has gone up 40-50% and electronics have gone up 100%.

the fucked up thing is its only gonna get worse cuz the jews convinced our idiot president to attack Iran, now diesel is up 150% and is the building block of all shipping worldwide. next year is gonna be catastrophic, but somehow stocks will still go up.

I'm having the same problem lately but it'll eventually start up. I don't know wtf is going on, it's a brand new PC.

I mean, MS sucks and all that but "Windows Update" didn't kill your RAM; it just died while Windows was updating, unless you have something more directly indicative that Windows Update was causative. Otherwise its just French peasants killing cats. The Great Cat Massacre - Wikipedia It's the worst time for anything, HD or Memory related at least to fail. I have a stack of unfinished project upgrades and other BS on my workbench that I felt was a $500 sign of failure; now it seems it's a $2500 spare parts pile for the Long Winter of the Rampocalypse. Hopefully it won't last that long, at least in the way the Big 3 DRAM companies (now 4 or 5? with the two new Chinese manufacturers) are indicating.

Windows Update is not going to break your PC any more than any other usage, from a hardware perspective. No warranties expressed or implied about your Windows 11 install, however; Microsoft is going to Microsoft from time to time and everyone's install is different but it's voodoo/Cargo Cultism to think that installing SOFTWARE is going to kill your RAM.

Also, it goes without saying, very sorry about your hardware issue as well.

Don't listen to the update apologists! You got an update that you didn't ask for, that you couldn't say no to, and it broke your shit! Feel free to hate Microsoft with all the fury that a new stick of ram is worth! And then reinstall Win10 (or linux).

"software can't break your hardware!" - Half of the posts in this thread in the last month are literally about software breaking hardware!

You're looking in the wrong end of the telescope. Hardware fails, sadly but WINDOWS UPDATE in particular wasn't the cause of it; it doesn't put any more strain on RAM than anything else. USE of RAM, as in running electricity through it to process 1s and 0s eventually causes hardware to fail, so in that sense, "software" does indeed cause hardware to fail, as all hardware eventually does.

In particular, the power standard and the corresponding cables nVidia came up to run their power-hungry cards, that got rubber stamped because they are the 800lb gorilla of the industry, are terrible and prone to failure, pushing too much wattage over a single wire and burning out, and THAT kills their hardware. It's really hardware killing hardware. Is that what you mean? Otherwise I am not sure what "software" is killing hardware.

Maybe I missed it? Help a brother out.

Note: Fails in the sense it has a (seemingly much statistically significant) higher failure rate than previous 8x2 or 8x3 power cables. I will never own a (card powered by) a16-pin cable whatever, so I guess that locks me out of Club Green for all time, unless something SUPER compelling comes along and makes me get over my desire to not have my machine combust into molten slag. I already own an NZXT H1 I had to fix myself, so not eager to get back on the "could burst into flames at any time" bandwagon again.
